Those figures do not prove the policy alone drove growth, but they contradict the claim that it triggered a millions-of-subscribers collapse.
What the headline gets wrong
“Netflix lost millions of subscribers as account sharing ended” bundles together three claims: that Netflix lost subscribers, that the loss was in the millions, and that ending account sharing caused it. The first is true for particular periods; the other two do not accurately describe the key reported events. Netflix’s approximately 200,000 paid-membership decline in Q1 2022 came before its broad paid-sharing rollout. Later, after rollout began, reported paid memberships grew.
It also matters what “subscriber” means. Netflix reported paid memberships and net additions, not a count of every person who watched. A borrower who opened a paid account could add to Netflix’s paid-membership count while not being a new viewer of the service.
Netflix’s losses came before the broad crackdown
Q1 2022: about 200,000 paid memberships lost
On April 19, 2022, Netflix reported its first quarterly paid-membership decline in more than a decade: approximately 200,000 fewer paid memberships in Q1. It also warned of further near-term pressure. This was a notable reversal, but it was not a loss of millions in that quarter and did not follow the later broad rollout of paid sharing. A broader growth slowdown
Netflix’s 2022 setback had several contributing pressures. The company pointed to competition, macroeconomic conditions and the reversal of extraordinary pandemic-era growth, as well as account sharing. The company’s shareholder letter treated sharing as one issue among several, not a standalone explanation for the quarterly decline. Netflix’s Q1 2022 shareholder letter also described the challenge of turning shared viewing into paid relationships.
Netflix estimated that more than 100 million additional households were using accounts without directly paying for the service. That figure described households sharing, not 100 million confirmed cancellations or lost paid memberships. Netflix’s commercial bet was that some borrowers would start accounts, some account owners would pay for extra members, and some users would cancel—and that the conversions could outweigh the cancellations.
What Netflix changed—and what it did not
Netflix announced that it planned to expand its account-sharing approach broadly in early 2023. On February 8, 2023, it described a system based on a Netflix Household and options for people outside it, rather than a blanket ban on every use away from home. The rollout began in 2023, including expansion to additional markets such as the United States. The Q3 2022 letter set out the planned timing, and Netflix’s sharing update explained its approach.

Ways a former borrower could continue
- Open a separate account: Profile Transfer can move viewing history, recommendations, My List, saved games and settings to a new account. The new account has its own billing relationship.
- Use an extra-member slot: Eligible Standard and Premium account owners can add an extra member in supported markets and packages, for an additional fee.
- Cancel: Someone who does not want a separate account or an eligible extra-member option can leave the service.
The exact options depend on country, plan and billing arrangement. Netflix’s extra-member and profile-transfer guidance says extra members are not available on ad-supported plans or some partner-billed packages, and the extra member must activate in the same country as the account owner. Availability is not universal.
It is not a rule that every device outside the home is blocked
The policy focuses on sustained use outside the account’s household; travel and temporary use are not the same as permanently sharing across households. The experience can depend on the device, account setup, country and plan. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the change as an immediate block on every person or device away from a primary location.
Memberships rose after paid sharing rolled out
Netflix’s reported paid-membership figures after the rollout show net additions, not a collapse. These are company-reported period results; they do not identify how many additions came specifically from former borrowers.

The figures come from Netflix’s Q2 2023, Q4 2023 and Q2 2024 shareholder letters. Netflix said paid sharing, price changes and its content slate contributed to growth; for Q4 2023, it specifically cited paid sharing, pricing and programming as contributors to revenue growth. That is management’s attribution, not proof that the policy alone produced the gains.
What the figures say about revenue—and what they cannot prove
The evidence supports a positive commercial contribution from paid sharing, but it cannot isolate the policy’s precise effect. A former borrower becoming a paid member, an existing subscriber buying an extra-member slot and a returning customer are different pathways. Netflix’s net-addition totals do not break out a definitive count for each.

Netflix’s Q2 2024 letter said revenue growth was driven primarily by a 16% year-over-year increase in average paid memberships, alongside other factors. Its Q4 2023 letter also credited paid sharing as one contributor to top-line growth. Neither statement means every new paid membership—or every dollar of growth—came from the crackdown.

There is a further limit for readers assessing the story today: Netflix stopped reporting several detailed membership metrics, including paid memberships at period end and paid net additions, beginning with its Q1 2025 Form 10-Q. Its 2025 Form 10-K reported revenue of about $45.18 billion, up from about $39.00 billion in 2024, and attributed revenue growth primarily to memberships, price increases and increased advertising revenue. Revenue alone cannot establish how subscriber counts changed, because pricing, advertising and plan mix can change revenue too. The 2025 Q2 Form 10-Q and 2025 Form 10-K mark the reporting context.

If you are paying for the account
Check whether your plan and billing arrangement support an extra member, and whether the person is in the same country. An extra-member slot may maintain a connection to the account owner’s subscription; a separate account gives the former borrower independent billing and control. The right choice depends on availability and how much independence each person wants—not on a universal price or plan rule.
Netflix’s 2025 Form 10-K gives a worldwide extra-member range equivalent to $2–$9 per month as of December 31, 2025. That is not a current price quote for a particular country, plan or billing package. Netflix says prices and plans may change; consult its plan and pricing information for the relevant market.

If you are borrowing someone else’s account
Profile Transfer can carry viewing history and other personalization to a new account, but it does not carry over the original account’s billing arrangement. If you are considering an extra-member slot instead, confirm that the account owner’s plan and package support it before making a decision.
If you live between homes or travel
A second home, temporary trip and ongoing use by someone in a separate household can produce different outcomes. The headline version of the policy—“every device outside the house is blocked”—does not capture those distinctions. For your situation, use Netflix’s current household and extra-member guidance rather than assuming that location alone determines access.
Verdict: the major loss preceded the crackdown
Netflix did report a paid-membership decline, but the widely cited Q1 2022 loss was about 200,000 and came before the broad paid-sharing rollout. After the rollout began, Netflix reported millions of net additions and said paid sharing contributed to business growth. The available figures do not prove the policy caused all of that growth, and Netflix’s later reporting no longer supplies the same detailed membership counts. The claim that Netflix lost millions of subscribers because account sharing ended is therefore misleading.
