Yes: YouTube Premium Lite now includes background playback and offline downloads for most eligible videos. YouTube announced the additions on February 24, 2026, and its current help page lists both as Lite benefits. The key limitation is that they generally exclude Shorts and music content, so Lite is not full Premium for less.
What changed in Premium Lite?
When YouTube launched the expanded U.S. Premium Lite plan in March 2025, it cost $7.99 per month and did not include background play or downloads. On February 24, 2026, YouTube announced that both features would be added, with a rollout beginning immediately and continuing over the following weeks in locations where Lite is available. The current Premium Lite help page now lists them for most videos.
The features are intended for the YouTube mobile app and, where available, the YouTube Kids mobile app. They do not promise offline playback or background audio on every device, browser, or kind of video. See YouTube’s announcement for the rollout details.
Which videos are covered—and where can ads remain?
“Most videos” is the important qualification. Premium Lite’s background play and download benefits generally apply to non-music videos, not all YouTube content.

- Ads may still appear: on music content and Shorts, as well as when you search or browse.
Lite therefore reduces ads on most eligible conventional videos; it does not make every part of YouTube ad-free. The exclusions and ad limitations are listed on YouTube’s current plan page.
Premium Lite or full YouTube Premium?
The choice mostly comes down to what you watch. Lite now adds two useful features for ordinary creator videos, but music remains the dividing line: Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium, and its background-play and download benefits do not extend to music content.

Who is Lite likely to suit?
- Creator-video viewer: A good match if you mostly watch tutorials, gaming, news, cooking, comedy, commentary, or other non-music videos and want background audio or offline viewing.
- Podcast, lecture, or long-video listener: Background play can keep eligible audio going while you switch apps or lock your phone.
- Frequent music or Shorts viewer: A poor match if you want music videos to play with the screen off, YouTube Music Premium, or ads removed from Shorts.
- Traveler: Useful for eligible videos you download in advance, but downloads are temporary and app-bound rather than permanent files.
How to use background play
Background play continues audio from an eligible video when the YouTube app is in the background, you switch apps, or your phone screen is off. YouTube describes it as a mobile-app feature. Its general setting path is:

YouTube app → Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Background Play
Choose Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers, where those choices are available. YouTube notes that settings and availability can vary with account rollout, app version, device, and location. Its background-play instructions also distinguish this from picture-in-picture: background play keeps audio going while the app is away, whereas picture-in-picture keeps a small video window visible over other apps. Lite’s new benefit is background play, not a blanket promise of every Premium playback feature.

How to download a video for offline viewing
- Sign in to the YouTube app with the Google account subscribed to Premium Lite.
- Open an eligible video and tap Download below it.
- Choose a quality if prompted.
- Open the app’s Downloads section to watch without a connection.
YouTube downloads are encrypted and playable only inside the YouTube app; they are not ordinary video files in your gallery or file system. YouTube’s offline-video FAQ explains this restriction. Its general download instructions also describe browser downloads for Premium users, but do not assume the same desktop support for every Lite account, browser, or region.
How long downloads last
YouTube says downloaded videos can typically be watched offline for up to 29 days before the device needs to reconnect so availability can be checked. In some countries or regions, the offline period can be as short as 48 hours. A download may also stop working if the video is removed or becomes unavailable, the membership ends, the account is no longer signed in, or the app needs to revalidate it. These are offline-viewing rules, not permanent ownership.
Availability and price depend on your location
Premium Lite is offered only in selected locations. Check YouTube’s Premium Lite signup page while signed in to see whether it is available to your account and the price YouTube offers there. Prices and feature availability can differ by country, billing channel, taxes, and account status.

The often-quoted $7.99 per month was the U.S. launch price in March 2025, not a verified current price. YouTube’s launch announcement records that historical amount; use the live checkout page for the price applicable to you.

Try these checks in order, testing an ordinary non-music video rather than a Short or music video:
- Confirm the subscription is active and belongs to the Google account currently signed in. Check Profile picture → Paid memberships.
- Update the YouTube app, then sign out and back in to the account that holds Lite.
- For background play, open Settings → Background & downloads → Background Play and check the selected option.
- Restart the app or device. Check that background data is allowed and that another app is not taking over audio.
- If a download fails, try a stable connection and check that the device has enough free storage.
- If the feature remains unavailable on eligible content after these checks, contact YouTube support; availability can vary by location and rollout.

Upgrade or cancel Premium Lite
For memberships started through a browser or Google Play, YouTube documents this upgrade route: open paid memberships in a browser, select Manage Membership, choose Upgrade, and confirm the new plan. If you subscribed through Apple or another billing provider, follow the management option shown for your membership.
YouTube’s documented cancellation steps are: go to youtube.com/paid_memberships, choose Manage membership, then Deactivate and Continue to cancel. Choose a reason, select Next, and confirm cancellation. The available steps may differ if another provider bills the subscription.
