Paramount+ is most worthwhile for viewers who want its CBS and Paramount programming, selected live sports, or—on Premium—the full SHOWTIME library and local live CBS. It is less convincing as an all-purpose replacement for every streaming service: its strongest value depends on whether you regularly watch those specific brands and events. In the United States, as of August 16, 2026, the key choice is between lower-priced, ad-supported Essential and Premium, which adds several substantial features.

Paramount’s current support documentation lists two U.S. plans. Older pages may call Premium “Paramount+ with SHOWTIME”; Premium is the current plan name.

Prices and plan features are from Paramount’s U.S. plan documentation. The annual option costs less than 12 monthly payments at these listed rates: Essential saves about $17.89 a year and Premium about $27.89. That trade-off only makes sense if you expect to keep the service for most of the year.
What Paramount+ is—and what it offers
Paramount+ brings together films from Paramount Pictures, CBS programming, Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Smithsonian Channel, original productions, news, sports, and curated channels. Premium also includes SHOWTIME programming. The service’s identity is therefore broader than a single studio library, but it is not a promise that every title from every brand is always available.

Its catalog is strongest for viewers who already seek out Star Trek, CBS shows, Nickelodeon, or Taylor Sheridan series such as 1883, 1923, and Tulsa King. Premium adds SHOWTIME series including Yellowjackets, Dexter, Billions, and The Chi. Paramount describes its programming mix on its programming information page. Catalog rights change, and availability can differ by plan and region.
Advantages of Paramount+
A recognizable mix of entertainment brands
Rather than relying on one genre, the service combines studio movies, network television, reality and comedy programming, children’s shows, and originals. Paramount says its library includes more than 40,000 full episodes and hit movies; counts and available titles can change. That breadth is useful when several members of a household want different kinds of programming, though a large catalog count alone does not guarantee that it will suit a particular viewer.
Live sports add value beyond on-demand shows
Paramount’s plan materials list NFL on CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, and Zuffa Boxing among the sports offerings, with additional sports and events on Premium. The exact event and plan access can vary. For viewers who already want the entertainment catalog, those live events can make the subscription more useful than a service limited to on-demand programming.

Premium bundles more than fewer ads
Premium brings together full SHOWTIME access, a local live CBS station where available, eligible downloads, and selected enhanced-format video alongside ad-free on-demand viewing. That bundle can suit a household that would use several of those features. If the main goal is simply access to Paramount’s basic on-demand library, the higher price may be difficult to justify.

Nickelodeon supports family viewing
Nickelodeon programming gives Paramount+ a meaningful children’s and family dimension alongside its adult-focused shows and films. It can serve households that want both, but the available information does not establish it as a complete substitute for a dedicated children’s service.
Profiles and streams accommodate many households
Both plans allow up to six profiles and three simultaneous streams. Profiles let viewers keep separate recommendations and watch histories; they do not increase the number of people who can stream at once.

Disadvantages and limitations
Essential has ads and omits important features
Essential is ad-supported and does not include the local live CBS station, full SHOWTIME, or Premium downloading privileges. It also lacks Premium’s ad-free on-demand experience and certain additional sports or event access. A subscriber who assumes any plan includes a local CBS affiliate or the complete SHOWTIME library may choose the wrong tier.
Premium is not completely free of advertising
Premium’s ad-free claim applies to on-demand shows and movies, not every part of the service. Live television carries ads, and plan disclosures allow trailers, sponsorships, or similar promotional material. Viewers seeking an entirely commercial-free experience should not interpret “ad-free” literally across all programming.
Sports access is not a complete sports package
“NFL on CBS” does not mean every NFL game, and a listed competition does not guarantee access to every event. Rights, market rules, local availability, and plan eligibility matter; live events also include advertising. A live stream does not necessarily come with a complete replay archive. Paramount+ is a useful add-on for particular sports, not a universal replacement for a cable sports package or broad coverage of leagues such as the NBA, MLB, and NHL.

Local live CBS is a Premium feature, not the same as CBS news channels
Essential includes CBS News 24/7 and CBS Sports HQ, but not the subscriber’s local CBS station. Premium includes that local feed where available. If local CBS is the main reason for subscribing, check availability for your market before paying; this feature does not turn Paramount+ into a complete live-TV replacement.
The catalog may not sustain year-round interest for every viewer
Paramount+ is most compelling when its specific franchises, films, or sports are a regular part of your viewing. Tom’s Guide describes the service as appealing but not necessarily essential year-round, citing an inconsistent flow of must-watch originals—an editorial assessment rather than a universal measure. Viewers who want a continuously refreshed, broad movie selection or a steady stream of prestige originals may find another service a better fit.
Downloads and enhanced video are selective
Downloads apply to eligible titles on Premium, not the whole catalog or every device. Paramount’s download rules give a saved title a viewing window ending at the earlier of 30 days after download or 48 hours after playback begins. Selected Premium titles support 4K UHD, Dolby Vision, or HDR10, but format availability depends on the title, device, and connection; it is not a catalog-wide guarantee. Which plan should you choose?
Choose Essential for low-cost, brand-focused viewing
- You want the lower regular price and can tolerate ads.
- You mainly want Paramount originals, CBS-related programming, Paramount films, Nickelodeon, or eligible sports.
- You do not need the local live CBS station, full SHOWTIME, or offline downloads.
Choose Premium when its added features matter
- You want the full SHOWTIME catalog or local live CBS where available.
- You value ad-free on-demand viewing, while accepting that live TV and promotions may still contain ads.
- You expect to use eligible downloads, selected 4K/HDR titles, or Premium sports and events.
Pay monthly or annually based on how you watch
Monthly billing is more flexible if you are following a particular show, testing the catalog, or subscribing around a sports season. Annual billing is cheaper at the listed regular rates if you expect to keep the service for most of a year. For occasional viewing, rotating Paramount+ on and off may be more sensible than paying continuously.
Is Paramount+ good for sports?
It is a strong fit for viewers interested in qualifying NFL games on CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, and other listed events. Paramount’s documentation names these offerings but does not make them universal across plans, markets, or events. Verify the specific event and applicable plan before subscribing, especially if a single game or fight is your main reason for joining. Viewers who need extensive coverage across multiple professional leagues should look for a broader sports package.

Compatibility can vary by model and feature, and device support changes over time. Confirm your exact device on Paramount’s supported-device page before subscribing. Buying through an app store, device marketplace, or bundle may change billing and cancellation management; subscribe directly through Paramount’s plan page if you want the simplest direct billing relationship.
