For a brief stretch in 2025, Max traded its bright-blue look for a black-and-white identity that made the HBO connection hard to miss. The resemblance was real; an intentional attempt to copy HBO’s logo was not established. And the identity did not last: Warner Bros. Discovery began restoring the HBO Max name on July 9, 2025.
What changed in Max’s logo?
On March 30, 2025, Max introduced a black-and-white logo treatment and broader monochrome visual palette, replacing the bright-blue identity associated with its 2023 launch. The update appeared across the service’s branding and social channels, though it need not have reached every market, app, or device at the same time. Cached icons and platform-specific artwork could also linger after an update. Variety reported the identity change, while Android Headlines described the shift from blue to monochrome.
This was more than a single logo file changing color: the surrounding visual system moved into the same stark, high-contrast register. In a side-by-side comparison, the useful distinction is not that the marks are identical, but that the new Max treatment shared HBO’s monochrome palette and minimalist feel.
Why did it look so much like HBO?
HBO’s black-and-white wordmark and restrained presentation have long served as recognizable signals of the brand. By leaving blue behind, Max adopted a visual language that viewers already associated with HBO. The resemblance carried extra weight because the service had been renamed Max in 2023 partly to position it as a broader entertainment platform rather than a service defined by HBO alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the comparison about more than color. HBO signals premium programming and prestige; Max was a larger service containing HBO titles alongside a broader range of entertainment. The monochrome redesign could be read as bringing the parent service closer to HBO’s prestige cues. That is an interpretation of the branding, not a confirmed explanation from Warner Bros. Discovery.
Was Max officially trying to imitate HBO?
The documented facts are that Max adopted a black-and-white identity and that contemporary coverage said it evoked HBO’s branding. The cited reporting does not establish a detailed official design rationale or a public admission that the mark was meant to imitate HBO. “HBO-adjacent” or “evocative of HBO” is more accurate than saying Max copied HBO’s logo.

Visual similarity alone also does not demonstrate trademark infringement or a legal dispute. A monochrome palette and minimalist wordmark are not, by themselves, proof of copying.
How did the redesign fit Max’s branding timeline?
| Date | Branding milestone | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | HBO Max launched | The streaming service used HBO in its consumer-facing name. |
| May 2023 | The service relaunched as Max | Warner Bros. Discovery presented Max as a broader entertainment product. The company’s launch announcement set out that positioning. |
| March 30, 2025 | Max adopted a black-and-white identity | The new look visually evoked HBO’s established monochrome branding. |
| May 14, 2025 | Warner Bros. Discovery announced a return to HBO Max | The company said the service would take the HBO Max name again. See the official announcement. |
| July 9, 2025 | HBO Max branding began returning | The Max-only identity became a short-lived phase. Variety reported the rollout date. |
The timing can make the March redesign look like a step toward the name restoration. But the sequence does not prove that the logo change was planned as a temporary bridge: the available sources establish the visual update and the later name decision, not that the July reversal had already been set when the new palette appeared.

Did the logo change mean Max was becoming HBO?
No. When the monochrome identity appeared, the consumer-facing service name was still Max. The visual update did not itself rename the service, turn all of its programming into HBO content, or make HBO and Max interchangeable content labels. The subsequent return to HBO Max was a separate branding decision announced in May and rolled out in July.
The broader strategic tension is clearer in retrospect: Warner Bros. Discovery had tried to give its streaming service a name that could encompass more than HBO, then restored HBO to the name. HBO remained a powerful prestige signal, while the service’s catalog extended beyond HBO programming. The redesigned Max logo briefly put those two ideas closer together visually.

How to compare the identities
A useful comparison places the former blue Max mark beside the March 2025 monochrome Max version, HBO’s established wordmark, and the later HBO Max identity. Look at the palette, contrast, simplicity, wordmark treatment, and which brand appears to lead. Those features explain why a viewer might read the updated Max mark as HBO-related at a glance; they do not establish that the logos were the same or that one was copied from the other.
