Friday, April 12, 2024, opened Coachella Weekend 1 in Indio with Peso Pluma making his Coachella debut before Lana Del Rey closed the Coachella Stage. Del Rey’s first festival performance in a decade brought a cinematic entrance and high-profile guests, though the reviews of her vocals and energy were divided.
When Peso Pluma and Lana Del Rey performed
Coachella 2024 took place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, across April 12–14 and April 19–21. Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, and Doja Cat headlined the festival. On Friday of Weekend 1, Peso Pluma was scheduled for 9:05 p.m. and Del Rey for 11:20 p.m. on the Coachella Stage; the schedule times were Pacific Daylight Time.
The order gave the evening two distinct focal points: Peso Pluma’s first Coachella appearance and Del Rey’s return as a headliner ten years after her 2014 festival debut. The account here compares those two performances, not the full Friday lineup.
Lana Del Rey’s theatrical return
A staged entrance and a wide-ranging set
Del Rey arrived on a motorcycle and performed against a set designed to resemble a mansion in disrepair. GRAMMY.com described the performance as a 20-song set and praised its staging and early choices, including “Without You,” “West Coast,” and her version of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time.” The Los Angeles Times also singled out “West Coast” and “Doin’ Time.”

GRAMMY.com emphasized the spectacle and praised the staging and portions of the set. In contrast, The Guardian’s Alaina Demopoulos criticized Del Rey’s energy and vocals and reported ongoing microphone problems. Those are distinct critical accounts, not evidence of a unanimous response.

Peso Pluma’s Friday performance was his Coachella debut—not his first live performance or first major festival appearance. GRAMMY.com characterized his sound as a fusion of folky guitar ballads and modern hip-hop. Its Weekend 1 recap named Becky G and Arcángel among the special guests who appeared during his set.
