Cobalt Blue turns a brother and sister’s attraction to the same paying guest into a quiet family upheaval. Sachin Kundalkar’s adaptation is most vivid when it follows Tanay’s adolescent desire, rendered in sensual, dreamlike images; Anuja’s side of the story receives less space and, in Nandini Ramnath’s assessment, feels rushed.
What happens when a brother and sister fall for the same paying guest?
Netflix’s official synopsis describes Cobalt Blue as the story of a brother and sister who fall in love with the same man, and of the traditional Marathi family shattered by what follows. The tenant remains enigmatic, while the siblings’ separate longings unsettle the household around them. Kundalkar wrote and directed the 2022 Hindi-language drama.
Ramnath’s review places the story in 1996 Fort Kochi. Tanay is a college student who writes poetry, and the film’s emotional center is his awakening desire for the tenant. Rather than treating the premise as a conventional romantic rivalry, the film uses it to explore private yearning and the rupture it causes within a family.
How does the film adapt Kundalkar’s novel?
Kundalkar adapted his own novel, first published in Marathi in 2006. The English translation, published in 2013, is by Jerry Pinto. The novel’s divided “his and her” sections give the siblings distinct narrative space; Ramnath argues that the film’s episodic structure shifts that balance toward Tanay.

Some of the source’s sensual imagery, close attention to desire and underlying melancholia survive the move to the screen. The film also moves between fantasy and waking life, though Ramnath finds that balance inconsistent. Its dreamlike approach can make longing feel immediate, but atmosphere alone cannot supply the emotional development that the less-heard character needs.
Why is Tanay’s story the film’s strongest element?
Ramnath finds the film most alive in its attention to Tanay’s adolescent passion. Neelay Mehendale’s delicate characterization gives the student’s longing vulnerability, while Prateik Babbar’s screen presence makes the tenant an arresting object of desire. As Ramnath puts it, “Neelay Mehendale’s delicate characterisation of Tanay and Prateik Babbar’s overt hunkiness create the film’s most memorable moments, which have the vividness of primary colours and the erotic flush of first love.”

Ramnath considers scenes focused on the parents and older brother disposable, and finds the pacing inconsistent.
Does Anuja get an equal perspective?
Not in Ramnath’s reading. Where the novel’s divided perspectives make room for both siblings, the film gives Tanay’s sexual awakening more narrative weight. Anuja’s entanglement with the tenant is comparatively rushed, leaving her point of view incomplete rather than fully developed alongside her brother’s.

This imbalance matters because the shared attraction is the premise’s central complication. The film makes Tanay’s desire vivid, but its compressed treatment of Anuja limits how fully the sibling relationship—and the different meanings the same upheaval might hold for each of them—can unfold.
