Celine Dion announced in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder that can cause muscle stiffness and spasms. The available sources do not establish that her condition is terminal. SPS can worsen and cause serious disability, but that is not the same as a terminal prognosis for an individual.

What did Celine Dion say about her diagnosis?

In a video announcing her diagnosis in December 2022, Dion said that she had been dealing with health problems for a long time. TIME reported her saying: “I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time…we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having.” She also said the condition affected her ability to sing and that she needed to focus on treatment.

A 2024 interview associated with the documentary I Am: Celine Dion offered further personal context. It is not, by itself, a current medical update or evidence of a particular prognosis.

What is stiff-person syndrome?

Stiff-person syndrome is a rare neurological disorder. The U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) says it is thought to have autoimmune features. Symptoms can include stiffness in the torso, arms, and legs, as well as sensitivity to noise, touch, or emotional distress that may trigger muscle spasms. NINDS describes the condition as potentially progressive and disabling.

The phrase “stiff man syndrome” is older terminology. “Stiff-person syndrome” is the current name and reflects that the condition can affect people of any sex.

A 2023 article hosted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine estimated prevalence at about 1 case per million. That is the article’s estimate, not a definitive current count of cases worldwide.

Why “terminal” is not an established description of Dion’s diagnosis

The sources cited here do not say that Dion has a terminal diagnosis or provide a terminal prognosis. SPS may worsen over time and can cause substantial disability, but those general features do not establish what will happen to a particular person. The 2022 announcement and the 2024 documentary-related interview should not be presented as proof that she is dying.

How is SPS diagnosed?

Because SPS is rare and can be mistaken for other conditions, diagnosis involves clinical assessment rather than a single result interpreted in isolation. NINDS describes a neurological examination and tests that may include antibody testing and electromyography (EMG); MRI may be used to help rule out other causes.

Many people with SPS have elevated GAD antibodies, but elevated levels can also occur in diabetes. An antibody result alone therefore does not establish SPS; it must be interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, and other clinical evidence by a qualified clinician.

How is stiff-person syndrome treated?

Treatment is individualized and may address symptoms, immune activity, or the effects of disability. NINDS lists prescription medicines such as diazepam, baclofen, gabapentin, dantrolene, and tizanidine as options for managing stiffness or spasms. These are clinician-supervised treatments, not medicines to start or adjust without medical advice.

NINDS also describes evidence from an institute-funded study that intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) reduced stiffness and sensitivity and improved gait and balance in people with SPS. Physical therapy and speech therapy may also be part of care. These general treatment approaches do not establish which treatments Dion receives.

What the documentary can—and cannot—tell viewers

I Am: Celine Dion provides a personal account connected to her experience of illness. A documentary can help viewers understand what a person chooses to share, but it is not a substitute for a current medical statement. Her diagnosis should be discussed using the condition’s current name, and claims about her treatment or prognosis should not go beyond what she or reliable reporting has stated.
