Before the Paris 2024 opening ceremony, reports said Céline Dion and Lady Gaga were expected to perform Édith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose” as a duet. That was the pre-event report, not the performance described in accounts after the ceremony. Held on July 26, 2024, the ceremony featured separate performances by Gaga and Dion; post-event coverage identified Dion’s song as Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour.”
What was reported before the ceremony?
In the days before the opening ceremony, The Guardian reported that Dion and Gaga were expected to sing “La Vie en Rose” together. Euronews also described the duet as expected, citing earlier reporting. These reports establish what was anticipated before the event; they do not confirm that the duet took place.
The Guardian’s July 25 report and Euronews’ July 26 coverage both framed the song and duet as expected, rather than reporting a performance that had already happened.
What happened at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony?
The ceremony took place in Paris on July 26, 2024. Paris 2024’s official recap lists both Lady Gaga and Céline Dion among the performers, while Reuters’ account describes their performances separately: Gaga sang a French cabaret song, and Dion closed the ceremony from the Eiffel Tower with Piaf’s “Hymn to Love.”

The Paris 2024 recap names both artists. NBC reports Jolly said: “We wanted to ask the best singer to sing love and this is Celine Dion.”
Why the two Piaf songs are easy to confuse
Both the pre-event rumor and the eventual closing performance involved songs associated with Édith Piaf, but they were different songs. The expected duet was “La Vie en Rose”; NBC Olympics and Reuters identify Dion’s closing song as “L’Hymne à l’amour,” rendered in English as “Hymn to Love.”
