Spoilers for Chainsaw Man chapter 171. The chapter’s most horrifying moment is not simply Denji’s transformation: it is the apparent recognition of Nayuta’s severed head that turns stunned grief into violence. His attack on Barem and emergence as black Chainsaw Man make private loss erupt into a public catastrophe.
What happens in chapter 171?
Chapter 171, titled “特異5課” (roughly, “Special Division 5”), was published on Shueisha’s Japanese Shonen Jump+ on July 17, 2024. VIZ’s English catalog lists the chapter, but that listing does not establish its chapter-specific English release date. Shueisha’s chapter listing and VIZ’s chapter catalog provide the publication context.
The scene sequence described here is based on a reader-created accessibility breakdown, not an official plot synopsis or substitute for the manga. Denji remains fixed on what appears to be Nayuta’s lifeless, severed head and weakly says her name. Barem apologizes, then argues that the suffering was necessary for his plan. Denji attacks him; in the ensuing struggle, Barem is killed. Denji’s body undergoes an uncanny change, culminating in his transformation into the black, four-armed Chainsaw Man as the restaurant descends into chaos. The breakdown supports this account.
Why is Denji’s transformation so disturbing?
The emotional trigger matters. Denji does not begin this sequence in response to an ordinary battle challenge: he appears to recognize Nayuta’s head. The chapter places a moment of intimate, almost speechless grief immediately before his attack on Barem. That pivot makes the violence feel less like a tactical choice than a rupture.

The transformation then gives that rupture a visible form. Denji’s familiar public-facing identity as Chainsaw Man gives way to the black, four-armed figure. The contrast is an interpretive reading of the chapter’s images, not a confirmed statement of authorial intent. Its force comes from the abrupt change in scale: a personal loss becomes a spectacle that engulfs everyone in the restaurant.
What does Special Division 5 set up?
The latter part of the chapter introduces Public Safety’s Special Division 5, a group assigned to damage or contain Chainsaw Man. Their arrival shifts the story from Denji’s immediate confrontation with Barem to a wider Public Safety operation. The chapter ends with Chainsaw Man positioned behind the group, leaving the next move unresolved rather than showing the confrontation’s outcome.

That change from a confined restaurant to an organized response widens the stakes without easing the tension. Denji’s transformation has made him the focus of a containment effort, but chapter 171 stops before establishing what he will do or how the group will fare.
