In a 2016 interview at Melbourne’s Motorclassica, Chad and Chase McQueen discussed the TAG Heuer Monaco’s link to Steve McQueen, what family legacy means to them, and their own relationship with watches. For Chase, the watch offered a way to learn about a grandfather he never met; for Chad, the Monaco was an everyday watch, distinct from the sentimental Rolexes he kept safe.
The 2016 conversation at Motorclassica
Time+Tide writer Andy Green met Chad McQueen, Steve McQueen’s son, and Chase McQueen, Steve’s grandson, at the 2016 Motorclassica event in Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building. The meeting was arranged in connection with TAG Heuer. During the event, Chase also examined the Monaco’s inner workings with a TAG Heuer watchmaker.
The conversation centered on the Monaco because it connects Steve McQueen’s screen image with the family’s later relationship with TAG Heuer. The comments below reflect what Chad and Chase said in 2016, rather than a statement about their present-day views.
What the Monaco meant to Chase McQueen
Chase said he never had the chance to meet his grandfather. Seeing the watch associated with Steve McQueen—and encountering people his own age who still respond to his work—gave him a way to learn about him. As Chase put it, “It’s pretty interesting for me to see and to be able to learn about him.”

He also described the appeal as personal as well as historical: “I love the heritage behind these TAGs, and the Monaco especially, and my family.” That is Chase’s own account of the watch and its significance to him.
Chad McQueen on wearing watches, not collecting them
Chad drew a distinction between watches he wears and watches he preserves. He said he keeps two of his father’s Rolex Submariners in a safe because they are valuable to him and sentimental. He did not describe himself as a collector: “I wear TAG, but I’m not a watch collector.”

By contrast, he liked the Monaco as a watch he could wear regularly. In the interview, he said: “I can wear it every day, I beat the sh-t out of it, and it keeps on ticking.” Asked about the continued response to his father, Chad said, “Dad’s been gone 36 years now, but he resonates strongly today,” and called TAG Heuer’s campaign a good partnership.
Why the Heuer Monaco is linked to Steve McQueen
Heuer introduced the Monaco in 1969. TAG Heuer’s company history lists that year as the launch of the Autavia, Carrera and Monaco automatic chronographs, and labels its Monaco milestone “1969 – Monaco and McQueen.” The company traces its founding to Edouard Heuer in 1860; Techniques d’Avant-Garde took ownership in 1985, beginning the TAG Heuer chapter of the brand’s name.

The film connection is Le Mans, in which Steve McQueen wore a square Heuer Monaco. TAG Heuer’s account of the film’s watches says six examples of vintage reference 1133B were supplied to the set. The brand also cautions that it is difficult to identify precisely which example McQueen wore on screen, so a claim that one surviving watch is definitively the sole screen-worn Monaco goes beyond what that account establishes.
Vintage Heuer Monaco and modern TAG Heuer Monaco are not the same identity
The film-linked watch belongs to the vintage Heuer period and is discussed as reference 1133B. A contemporary TAG Heuer Monaco is a later product in the collection, not the same watch simply because it shares the Monaco name and design lineage. TAG Heuer’s 2024 magazine article links to the contemporary Monaco Chronograph model CAW211P.FC6356, while separately recounting the vintage film connection.

A later Porsche Newsroom interview with Madison McQueen, published March 26, 2021, adds a separate family perspective. Madison said Chad had founded McQueen Racing eleven years earlier and had passed his love of Porsche and racing to his children. She named Le Mans as a favorite film and McQueen’s Machines by Matt Stone as a favorite book. These details provide wider family context, but they were not part of Chad and Chase’s 2016 conversation.
