Castlevania: Nocturne uses its French Revolution setting to bring the Haitian Revolution, Black representation and questions of faith into the same fantasy story. In a January 17, 2025, interview with io9/Gizmodo, executive producer Clive Bradley and writers Zodwa Nyoni and Testament explain the choices behind that approach—and where they see adaptation as creative license rather than historical documentation.
Why connect the French and Haitian Revolutions?
Bradley says the French Revolution setting came from Rondo of Blood, whose story takes place in 1792. But the writers also wanted the series to acknowledge the Haitian Revolution. As Bradley put it, “it was vital, I think, to find some way to include the Haitian Revolution.”
He links that choice to the struggle against slavery in Saint-Domingue, the colony that later became Haiti, saying the writers wanted to recognize enslaved people’s own role in abolishing slavery. That is Bradley’s account of the historical framing, not a full history of abolition. Netflix’s official synopsis establishes the fictional setting: France in 1792, where Annette, a sorceress from the Caribbean, seeks Richter Belmont’s help against a counter-revolutionary alliance.
Nyoni says she was drawn to the meeting of historical realities and fantasy. She describes the aim as researching the setting while making room for the show’s fictional world. Testament says the writers also wanted to resist familiar but inaccurate visual clichés and brought up Haitian women—including Marie-Jeanne Lamartinière, Victoria Montou and Suzanne Bélair—as examples of the kinds of historical figures that informed their thinking. The interview raises these names but does not independently document their biographies.

How did the team approach Black representation?
Nyoni says the writers worked with Haitian American scholar Cécile Accilien for cultural and historical context. Their discussions included accuracy, language and where creative license was appropriate. Nyoni’s formulation was: “That specificity was significant for us to think about how we accurately represented the Haitian Revolution and found space for creative license.”
She also describes conversations with directors and animators about Annette’s appearance, including hair texture, clothing and facial features. The team used reference images, she says, rather than treating a generic visual shorthand as sufficient. That account documents the collaborators’ process and intentions; it is not, by itself, an outside evaluation of every detail in the finished animation or a measure of how viewers received it.

What role do spirituality and religion play?
Nyoni says Annette’s origin story was shaped by ideas of family, ancestors, deities and Orishas. She describes ancestors as a source of strength for the character as she confronts struggle. These are the writer’s comments about Annette and the series; they should not be taken as a general description of Haitian or Yoruba religious practice.
Testament says the writers wanted religion and the Church to have nuance, rather than presenting them as simple symbols of good or evil. He points to a conversation between Maria and the Abbott in season one as an honest theological debate in which neither character has the whole truth. He also says his own faith and real objections to organized religion informed his perspective: “I am a person of faith, hence Testament. My issues with organized religion are real.”

The interview distinguishes the show’s fictional theology and character perspectives from historical religious practice. It does not establish that Haitian Vodou, Yoruba traditions, Orishas and the series’ fantasy elements are interchangeable, and they should not be treated as such.
How closely does Nocturne follow the games?
Netflix describes Castlevania: Nocturne as a standalone series that expands the franchise, loosely based on the 1993 game Blood of Rondo. Bradley says the game’s 1792 setting helped lead the writers to revolutionary-era France. He also notes that Annette’s name carries over from the game, while her characterization was developed for the series’ story: “It flowed from the logic of the story we wanted to tell.”

Nyoni describes adaptation as an opportunity to create an Annette with a Haitian background who fit the world the show had built. In the interview, the writers address criticism that the changed character was unfaithful to the games, including the labels “Blackwashing” and “woke.” Their responses explain the creative rationale; the conversation does not measure audience opinion or establish how widespread those views are.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the interview say about revolution?
Nyoni’s thematic reading emphasizes that political change depends on people organizing together and continues beyond a single dramatic turning point. “You’ve got to find your people and organize to effect change,” she says. That is a statement of the series’ intended theme, not a claim that Nocturne is a documentary account of either revolution.
