In my view, that balance makes it bloody brilliant—not because every viewer will agree, but because the season gives its violence and supernatural spectacle real character stakes.
What season 2 is about
The eight-episode season premiered on Netflix on January 16, 2025. Its central conflict brings Richter Belmont and the vampire hunters together with Alucard to stop Erzsebet Báthory from claiming the full power of Sekhmet. The stakes are apocalyptic, but the story’s interest lies as much in how the characters respond to that threat as in the threat itself.
Returning characters include Richter, Maria, Annette, Edouard and Tera. Alucard joins the group after the events of season 1; showrunner Kevin Kolde describes him as a reluctant mentor to Richter and Annette. Erzsebet is played by Franka Potente, while Zahn McClarnon returns as Olrox. Netflix Tudum’s season announcement and interviews provide the cast and story details.
Why it earns the “bloody brilliant” verdict
Action with real character stakes
The season’s appeal is not just the promise of bigger fights. Richter and Annette’s changing roles, Alucard’s uneasy mentorship and the returning characters’ emotional histories give the battles a human dimension. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises the season’s visuals, emotional storytelling and tragedy, calling it a near-perfect continuation of the original series. That is an attributed critical assessment, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way.

A gothic world shaped by history
The story moves between Machecoul and Paris, with an ancient Egyptian temple tied to Alucard’s investigation of Sekhmet. The creators have said that the source game’s 1792 setting prompted them to explore the French Revolution, and that Annette’s character developed from a decision to connect the series with the Haitian Revolution. Those historical movements inform the setting and character work; the vampires, gods and supernatural struggle are fantasy, not documentary history.
A season with a destination
Rotten Tomatoes’ season 2 consensus describes the season as bringing its Parisian chapter to a satisfactory end. That makes the conclusion part of the season’s appeal for viewers who want a substantial arc rather than only another setup. The Tomatometer is a critics’ aggregation and can change; it is not a measure of audience unanimity.

Is season 2 worth watching?
It is a strong choice if you enjoy animated action built around gothic atmosphere and character drama, and if supernatural violence is part of the appeal rather than a drawback. The season’s broad historical backdrop adds texture, but this is still a vampire fantasy first—not a historical documentary. Viewers primarily looking for restrained horror or a strictly factual account of the revolutions may find the show’s priorities elsewhere.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% season 2 Tomatometer when its page was checked in January 2025; the retrieved listing did not state a review count. The figure is a critics’ score snapshot, not a viewer approval rate. For context, the same site displayed a 98% Tomatometer from 43 reviews for the full series when accessed October 8, 2026. That series-level score is separate from season 2’s score, and both can change. See the season 2 listing and consensus and the full-series page.

Do you need to watch season 1 first?
Yes, if you want the season’s alliances, character histories and relationships to land fully. Season 2 continues the same characters and begins from the group’s established conflict; Alucard’s arrival is also a development from the first season. Netflix lists Nocturne as a two-season series on its official title page. Starting with season 1 is the clearest route for a new viewer.

Netflix is the series’ listed streaming home, though catalogue availability and terms can vary by region and change over time. Netflix describes Nocturne as loosely based on the 1993 Castlevania game it calls Blood of Rondo. That makes the game a related source to explore, not a physical edition of the show; the season’s release and physical-media status are separate questions. Netflix links a season 2 trailer from its series page.
