The chart’s figures are domestic weekend grosses, not worldwide totals. Theater counts help explain the films’ different reach that weekend, but the totals are not per-screen comparisons: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened in more theaters and was beginning its run, while Reagan was already in its second weekend.
Was the opening a September record?
It was a major September opening, but not the month’s record-holder. TheWrap’s September 8, 2024 report described the opening as an estimated $110 million and called it the second-highest September opening at that point, behind It (2017), which opened to $123.4 million. The Numbers’ chart later lists the weekend total as $111,003,345; the estimate and charted figure are different reporting measures, not competing all-time records.

What happened the following weekend?
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice remained No. 1 in its second weekend, earning $51.6 million, down 54% from its opening weekend, and reaching $188.0 million domestically over ten days. Those figures were Comscore results reported by Screendollars on September 15, 2024. They show the film’s immediate follow-through after the opening, rather than changing the September 6–8 comparison with Reagan.

Cinemark said the film helped drive the company’s best domestic September box-office weekend of all time, along with records for concessions and premium formats. That statement, from Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble, describes Cinemark’s own results; it is not a claim about the entire U.S. theater market.
