To put free music on an SD card, download audio files from a source that authorizes downloads, extract any ZIP archive, then copy the tracks into a folder such as Music on the card. If you mean Spotify or YouTube Music offline listening, choose the SD card inside that app instead: those downloads are app-managed, not ordinary MP3 files you can move to another player.

Choose between music files and app downloads

The important distinction is whether you want transferable audio files or offline listening inside a streaming app.

Method Ordinary audio files? Playable in other music players? Account or service access
Download from Musopen, Free Music Archive, or Open Music Archive Usually, depending on the item Usually, if the player supports the format Usually not needed after you have the file
Download from Bandcamp Yes Yes Usually not needed after you have the file
YouTube Music offline download No; treat it as an app download Normally limited to YouTube Music Subject to the app, account, territory, and service rules
Spotify offline download No; Spotify manages the download No; intended for Spotify playback Subject to plan and periodic account verification

For files you can copy to a car stereo, standalone MP3 player, or another music app, use a source that provides actual downloadable audio. Free streaming does not automatically authorize downloading, and a free download does not automatically grant permission to redistribute or reuse the track.

Find free music you are allowed to download

“Free” can mean no charge, but rights still depend on the particular recording, composition, and license. Public-domain status can differ by country and can involve separate rights in a composition and its recording. Creative Commons licenses may require attribution or restrict commercial use, adaptations, or redistribution. “Royalty-free” describes usage rights under specific terms; it does not necessarily mean free of charge or unrestricted. Read the terms on the item you choose.

Musopen: classical recordings and scores

Musopen offers recordings and other classical-music resources, including recordings described as available for free download. Its FAQ advises users to assess copyright and public-domain status independently; do not assume that every recording is unrestricted just because it is available there.

Free Music Archive: independent music and license filters

Use the Free Music Archive search to explore tracks and filter by license, including public domain, commercial use, and Creative Commons terms. Check the license information on each track. The archive explains in its FAQ that “free” does not mean every use is permitted.

Sandisk Ultra microSD 64 GB 140MB/s
  • Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, and Windows laptops.
  • Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
  • View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
  • Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk

Before you start

  • Check that your device accepts a microSD card. Not every Android phone or tablet has a card slot; check the manufacturer’s specifications or inspect the SIM/SD tray.
  • Make sure Android recognizes the card. Look under your device’s storage settings. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
  • Back up anything important before formatting. Google warns that formatting erases the card. See Google’s SD-card setup guidance.
  • Prefer portable storage for a music library. Portable storage is suited to files you may use in another device. Adopted or internal storage is formatted and encrypted for that device and generally is not portable without reformatting.
  • Have a file manager and compatible player. The built-in Files or My Files app is usually enough to copy tracks; your music player must support the audio format and access the card.
  • Check available space. FLAC files are larger than MP3 files, and usable card capacity may be lower than its advertised capacity.

Download music files directly on an Android device

  1. Choose a permitted download. Use a track’s download control and check its license or usage terms. A track being playable online does not by itself authorize downloading or redistribution.
  2. Download the track or album. If prompted, choose Download. The result will usually be in the device’s Downloads folder.
  3. Extract a ZIP archive if needed. In Files or My Files, open Downloads, tap the ZIP file, then choose Extract or Extract to…. Confirm that the extracted folder contains audio files. A ZIP copied to the music folder will not normally play as tracks.
  4. Select the audio files or album folder. Long-press an item, then select other tracks if needed. Choose Copy to first if you want to keep the original while testing playback; choose Move to if you are ready to remove the original from internal storage.
  5. Choose the SD card as the destination. Open the card, then select or create a folder named Music. A common visible location is SD card/Music/. Some apps refer to it as /sdcard/Music/, but Android paths vary by device and version; the Android developer documentation explains the general variation at Android data storage.
  6. Complete the copy or move. Tap Copy here, Move here, or the equivalent shown by your file manager. Wait for the transfer to finish before removing the card.
  7. Open your local music player. Grant media or storage access if asked. Use Rescan, Refresh library, or a similar command if the tracks do not appear. If available, browse directly to the SD-card folder.

Choose a format your player supports

  • MP3: The practical default for broad compatibility with phones, cars, and standalone players.
  • FLAC: Lossless audio, but files are larger and some players do not support them.
  • Ogg Vorbis or AAC: May work, but compatibility depends on the specific player and hardware.

Bandcamp recommends MP3 when compatibility is the priority and notes that FLAC needs a compatible player and more storage in its Android download guidance.

Transfer music from a computer

  1. Download and extract the music on the computer. Keep the audio files, not just the ZIP archive.
  2. Connect the Android device by USB and select file transfer on the phone if prompted, or remove the portable microSD card and insert it into a card reader.
  3. Open the SD card on the computer. Create a Music folder if one is not already there.
  4. Copy the tracks into that folder. Copying leaves a second copy on the computer; verify playback from the card before deleting any backup.
  5. Eject the device or card safely before disconnecting it or removing it from the reader.

Save YouTube Music downloads to an SD card

YouTube Music can store its own downloads on an SD card. In the app, go to Profile picture → Settings → Downloads → Use SD card (the label can vary). Then download the music in the app. If the music was already downloaded to internal storage, Google’s YouTube Music instructions say to delete that download, change the storage location, and download it again; they do not describe moving it as a normal audio file. These are app-managed downloads, not files to assume you can export to another player. Availability is subject to the app, account, territory, and current service rules.

Save Spotify downloads to an SD card

On Android, open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage, choose the SD card, and tap Continue. Allow Spotify time to transfer its downloads and restart. Spotify says the storage option appears when an accessible external SD card is available and recommends at least 1 GB of free space. Its current instructions are at Spotify Support.

Spotify downloads are managed by Spotify for offline playback; they are not ordinary MP3s you can copy to a different player. Offline downloads are a Premium feature, and Spotify says downloads must periodically reconnect to remain active. Plan terms, price, and availability vary by country and can change; see Spotify’s US offline-download page for current US terms.

Fix common SD-card and playback problems

The card is not detected

  • Power off the device before reinserting the card, then check Settings → Storage (the exact path varies).
  • Test the card in another compatible device or card reader if available.
  • Do not format as a first troubleshooting step if the card contains files you need. Back up what you can first; formatting erases data.
  • If the card remains unreadable or files disappear, back up immediately if possible and consider card failure, corruption, incompatibility, or a counterfeit card.

Files are visible in the file manager but not in the player

  • Check that the ZIP archive was extracted and the audio files have a supported format.
  • Confirm the transfer completed and the files are not zero bytes.
  • Move one test MP3 into SD card/Music/, then refresh or rescan the player’s library.
  • Grant the player access to media or removable storage if requested; try folder browsing or another local player if the library remains empty.
  • Restart the player or device if a completed copy still is not indexed.

The card is full, read-only, or files vanish

Check available space and avoid relying on a card that is losing files or refusing writes. Failing flash memory, filesystem corruption, unsafe removal, or a counterfeit card can cause these symptoms. Back up the music elsewhere before further troubleshooting.

The music plays on the phone but not in a car stereo

Car stereos can have specific format, filesystem, capacity, folder-depth, and file-naming limits. Some support MP3 but not FLAC or Ogg; others may not support the card’s filesystem. Check the stereo’s manual rather than assuming a card that works in a phone will work in the car.

An app download disappeared or stopped playing

Streaming-service downloads are not permanent ownership of transferable files. They may become unavailable if a subscription or account changes, the app is reinstalled or its data cleared, the user signs out, the region changes, or the service requires online verification.

Which method should you use?

Your goal Best fit Trade-off
Play music in different apps, a car stereo, or an MP3 player Download an authorized audio file and copy it to the card You must check the license and the player’s format support
Keep listening offline inside a streaming app Set that app’s storage location to the SD card Downloads remain app-managed and depend on service rules
Maximize compatibility Use MP3 It is not lossless
Keep lossless files Use FLAC if the target player supports it Files use more space and compatibility is less universal
Move a music library between devices Use portable rather than adopted storage Check that each device supports the card and its filesystem

If your phone has no microSD slot, use internal storage, a compatible USB-C flash drive or card reader, or a computer transfer instead; not every Android device can accept an SD card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respect the music’s license

Download only music the artist, rights holder, or platform has made available for download. Check whether the license permits your intended use, especially if you plan to share, remix, publish, or use a track commercially. Do not treat free streaming as permission to download, and do not assume a free-to-download track is free of all copyright restrictions.
