Yes: browser projects let you play Super Mario 64 without installing a conventional emulator. The project worth distinguishing is sm64js, an unofficial, ongoing JavaScript and WebGL port—not a Nintendo release. Hosted builds can change or disappear, so treat browser play as a fun technical demonstration rather than a guaranteed replacement for the game. Nintendo’s official option is its Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app for Switch and Switch 2, through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
What does “Mario 64 in your browser” mean?
Search results can lead to very different things: a JavaScript port, a WebAssembly build based on a PC port, a short demo or recreation, or a site that runs a game ROM in an emulator. Those are not interchangeable. This article focuses on sm64js, whose maintainers describe it as a native JavaScript port of the reverse-engineered Super Mario 64 codebase. It uses WebGL and says it does not rely on traditional emulation or WebAssembly.

The project is a work in progress. Its repository is the best place to check project status and instructions; a hosted page or fork can have different features, controls, and reliability. The project has also referenced multiplayer and custom modes, but those should not be assumed to work in every build.
How to try the browser version
Start with the sm64js repository and follow its current links to a hosted build. A project fork has been hosted at brohann3214.github.io/sm64js, but hosted demos are fragile; confirm that the page is available when you visit rather than relying on a promise that it will stay online.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo 64 Console (Black): Retro gaming console in a sleek black finish.
- Two Controllers (Red & Blue): Includes two vibrant controllers for multiplayer gaming.
- 256KB Memory Card: Save your game progress easily with ample storage.
- HDMI Adapter: Modern connectivity for easy setup with today’s TVs
- Power Adapter: Essential power supply included for immediate play.
- Open the project’s current hosted page in a modern desktop browser.
- Wait for the game and its assets to load, then click inside the game window so it has keyboard focus.
- Try the movement, jump, camera, and menu controls shown by that specific build. Controls can differ between forks, so do not rely on a universal key chart.
- If the build supports a controller, connect it before loading or refreshing the page. Browser gamepad support and mappings vary.
- Switch to fullscreen only after confirming that input works. Treat any saved progress as temporary unless that build explains its save system.
If the page loads but the game does not respond, try a current desktop browser, close other demanding tabs, and test keyboard input before troubleshooting a controller. If gamepad input is missing, reconnect the controller before reloading or try another browser. A script-blocking extension, browser restrictions, or a broken host can also prevent a build from working. Do not download supposed fixes from unofficial mirrors.
For technically comfortable readers, the repository documents this local development-server route:
Rank #2
git clone https://github.com/sm64js/sm64js.git
cd sm64js
npm install
npm run start
After the server starts, the repository says to open localhost in a browser. This route may require a suitable Node.js environment or dependency adjustments; a successful build on one machine is not guaranteed for every setup. The repository also documents a Docker-based route.
Why the browser port is impressive
- It brings a 3D console game into browser technology. sm64js combines JavaScript and WebGL, making the project an unusual demonstration of what a browser can run.
- It lowers the setup barrier. A hosted build can be opened without setting up a conventional emulator, which is handy for a short session or showing the game to someone.
- It is designed for browser portability. That does not mean every device or browser runs it equally well, but it makes the project accessible across desktop platforms that support the necessary web features.
- A controller can make play more comfortable. Where a build recognizes one, analog movement may feel more natural than keyboard input. Support depends on the build and browser.
The appeal is convenience and technical novelty, not a verified promise of better graphics, frame rate, or input response. Those depend on the device, browser, and particular hosted version.

What can go wrong?
The demo is unavailable
Personal and project-hosted pages can move, break, or be removed. If a link fails, check the project repository for current information. The sm64js archive can provide project background, but an archived page is not proof that a playable build is still online. Avoid replacing a dead demo with a random ROM-download site.
Performance or input is inconsistent
Performance varies with the browser, graphics hardware, device, background activity, and build. Mobile browsers are a less dependable choice than desktop browsers. Audio, fullscreen, gamepad input, and other browser features can also behave differently across systems. A fork may have different controls or bugs than the main project.

- 64-Bit Graphics
- Cartridge based game system (no scratched games!)
- Excellent game library available (over 300)
- Inexpensive compared to newer gaming systems
Progress does not persist
A browser save is not automatically a durable cloud save. Refreshing the page, using private browsing, clearing site data, or losing access to the host may erase progress. Do not count on a fan-hosted build for a long-term playthrough unless its own documentation explains how saving works.
An older article points to a different demo
Some older coverage described a limited Unity Web Player demo that offered only part of the game. Unity Web Player is obsolete, so that historical demo should not be mistaken for a current way to play. Other reports, including 2021 coverage of a browser-playable version, refer to builds whose original hosting may no longer be available.

Is the browser port official or legal?
No: sm64js is an unofficial fan project, not a Nintendo-authorized browser release. The repository displays a WTFPL license for its repository materials, but that label does not by itself establish that Nintendo’s original game assets, characters, music, or other protected material may be redistributed without restriction. The legal status of a particular hosted build can depend on what it distributes and on the jurisdiction. This is not legal advice.
Nintendo’s intellectual-property and piracy guidance says unauthorized copies of its games distributed online are illegal and warns against unauthorized ROM downloads. Do not use unofficial ROM sites or assume that a browser page has Nintendo’s permission. For an official consumer route, use Nintendo’s own service.
Browser port vs. Nintendo’s official option
| Option | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| sm64js browser build | Quick access, nostalgia, or interest in browser graphics | Can run from a web page without conventional emulator setup | Unofficial, work in progress, and dependent on the host and browser |
| Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics | Players who want Nintendo-supported access on a console | Nintendo lists Super Mario 64 in its Nintendo 64 collection, with Switch and Switch 2 support | Requires compatible Nintendo hardware and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; it is not browser-based |
| Original Nintendo 64 | Players seeking the original hardware context | Original console and controller experience | Requires the hardware and a legitimate game copy |
| Native PC port or mod project | Technically confident players seeking configuration or mods | Potentially more customization than a browser build | More setup; not browser play, and game assets raise separate legal considerations |
Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics page lists Super Mario 64 and support for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo says the collection requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. In the United States, Nintendo’s membership page listed the Expansion Pack at $49.99 per year for an individual membership and $79.99 per year for a family membership when checked August 18, 2026; prices and availability can vary by region and change over time.
Quick Recap
Which version should you choose?
- Choose a browser build for a quick session, a demonstration, or curiosity about running a classic 3D game through JavaScript and WebGL—provided a current hosted build is available.
- Choose Nintendo’s Switch option if official distribution and a console-oriented experience matter more than playing in a browser.
- Choose original hardware or a PC project if you specifically want the original console context or deeper configuration and are prepared for the extra setup.
