The historic distinction was specific: NBC Sports and the NFL announced a multilingual signed rendition incorporating Puerto Rican Sign Language (LSPR)—not the first sign-language performance in Super Bowl history.
Who was the performer?
Rivera Cosme is a Deaf Puerto Rican performer who had previously worked with Bad Bunny on tour and at his Puerto Rico residency. For the halftime show, she led a signing program in LSPR, bringing the language into one of the most visible musical performances of the event.
Bad Bunny was announced as the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show headliner at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday, February 8, 2026. The NFL’s announcement named the event and venue.
What made the performance historic?
In its February 6, 2026 announcement, NBC Sports and the NFL described the halftime rendition as a first: a multilingual signing program incorporating Puerto Rican Sign Language. That is the supported scope of the claim. It should not be broadened to say this was the first sign-language performance at a Super Bowl, or that previous halftime shows had no ASL.

The same announcement identified other sign-language performers for the event: Deaf music artist Fred Beam for the National Anthem and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and Julian Ortiz for “America the Beautiful.” Rivera Cosme led the halftime program.
What is Puerto Rican Sign Language, and is it ASL?
Puerto Rican Sign Language, also known as LSPR, is distinct from American Sign Language. ABC News describes LSPR as having its own grammar, rhythm, and cultural identity. It is not simply ASL performed with a Puerto Rican accent.

Puerto Rican slang also figures in LSPR vocabulary, according to KQED’s reporting. That context matters for a performance built around Bad Bunny’s music and language: conveying a song involves more than matching spoken words with signs.
Why did Rivera Cosme call it a performance?
Rivera Cosme told ABC News that her role was not only interpretation. “Interpretation is one thing, but I’m not going there to interpret, I’m going to perform. In Puerto Rico, we’re very used to seeing interpreters everywhere,” she said. “But the Super Bowl is different — you have to add your flow, your vibe, your style, and your attitude, and bring all of that together with the interpretation. The body’s movement is different.”

She told ABC News: “The most important thing is to emphasize that we have our own language, our own identity and our own culture.” She also said: “I feel incredibly proud because everything that Bad Bunny is doing is making history. And it means that sign language is also going to make history there.” Both quotations were given through an interpreter.
KQED reported that Rivera Cosme prepared by reviewing the set list and reading the lyrics. The outlet also quoted Octavio Cuenca Maldonado, president of the National Hispanic Latino Association of the Deaf, saying: “This is about language, culture, identity, and recognition by the world.” Rivera Cosme told KQED, speaking in LSPR through an interpreter: “I know I’m going to be the one standing up there,” she says, “but it’s the Deaf community of my island that’s going to shine.” These comments convey the significance as described by Rivera Cosme and people interviewed for the story; they are not a claim that every Deaf viewer shares one perspective.

How could viewers access the signed performances?
NBC and the NFL announced dedicated sign-language programming for the pregame and halftime performances through NBCSports.com and NBC.com. NBC also said its broadcast and stream would include closed captions for languages used during performances. Telemundo’s Spanish-language broadcast had Spanish captions, also available on NBC’s CC3, according to NBC’s event announcement.
Those were announced arrangements for Super Bowl LX; they do not establish that the event stream remains available at those addresses. The NFL’s video listing of the sign-language performers also names Rivera Cosme, Beam, and Ortiz.
