A study of the 250 highest-grossing films each year found that 2023 films contained just over 60% of the erotic content recorded in the 2000 sample. Buzz around films such as Poor Things and Saltburn is real; it is not, by itself, evidence that movies as a whole are getting sexier again.
What does “back” mean?
There are two different questions behind the phrase “sex scenes finally back”: are particular scenes attracting attention, and has sexual content become more common across screen entertainment? Recent projects have made sex and intimacy conspicuous subjects of discussion. But a handful of prominent titles cannot establish an industry-wide trend, especially when the best available numerical comparison covers only theatrical films with high box-office grosses and ends in 2023.
It also matters what is being counted. A measure of erotic-content volume does not tell us whether a scene is narratively specific, consequential to a character, or simply present. Those are different ways to assess screen sex, and the available count answers only the first kind of question.
What the film count found
In an analysis commissioned by The Economist, Stephen Follows examined the 250 highest-grossing films in each year from 2000 through 2023. The Guardian reported the findings on 2 May 2024: the 2023 group had just over 60% of the erotic content found in the 2000 group. In the same samples, the share of films with no sexual content rose from about 18% in 2000 to 46% in 2023. These figures describe that annual top-250 film sample—not every film, the entire screen industry, or audience attitudes. The Guardian’s account of the analysis also describes the decline as uneven: it was steep in action films and smaller in romantic films.

That makes “nearly 40% less” a useful shorthand for the change in this particular measure, but not a universal verdict about all genres or platforms. The sample is selected by box-office ranking, not designed to represent every release equally, and it says nothing about television. It also stops at 2023, so it cannot confirm whether the pattern continued, reversed, or changed after that year.
Why it can feel like a revival
Provocative films command attention
Poor Things and Saltburn helped fuel talk of a revival because their sexual material was prominent enough to become part of the films’ public identities. That visibility matters culturally, but a small number of talked-about releases should not be mistaken for a change in the average film.

Sex can be discussed as craft, not just content
In a Directors Guild of America Q&A, Babygirl director Halina Reijn described how preparation and choreography shape intimate scenes. Recalling her experience as an actor, she said she had not previously worked with an intimacy coordinator and felt that was “really bad”; after meeting coordinator Lizzy Talbot on Bodies Bodies Bodies, she said she loved the experience. Reijn compared the work to stunt coordination: “With sex scenes it’s the same.” She also said she valued brainstorming and having conversations before arriving on set. Television has added to the conversation, too. In a 2025 ELLE interview about Heated Rivalry, intimacy coordinator Chala Hunter described the scenes as “very specific and fairly explicit.” She said her goal was to ensure the actions performed were fully consented to while preserving the scene’s artistic purpose. That account offers a view into one production; it is not a measure of how much sex appears across television. Read the ELLE interview with Hunter.

What intimacy coordinators do—and what the rules require
Intimacy coordination is one part of the recent conversation about how intimate scenes are made. In a 2025 ELLE feature, Jessica Steinrock, CEO of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, described the role as “about providing production protocols, advocacy, and ensuring safety during the creation of intimate scenes.” Depending on the production, the work can include conversations about consent, choreography, modesty garments, and coordination among performers and the wider crew. Practitioners’ approaches and views differ, and the presence of a coordinator should not be treated as a guarantee of safety or as a restriction on artistic choices. Contract language is specific to its coverage. SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Network Television Code says producers must use best efforts to engage an intimacy coordinator for covered scenes involving nudity or simulated sex, and must consider performer requests for other scenes in good faith. This is a provision of that code, not a universal legal requirement or an industry-wide mandate. Read the 2025 Network Television Code. So, are movies getting sexier again?
Not on the evidence of the available count. The best numeric comparison points to less erotic content in the top-grossing-film sample in 2023 than in 2000, while a cluster of conspicuous films and later television projects has made the subject more visible. Those claims can coexist: cultural attention can rise even when a broad measure of content does not.
There is no comparable count here for television or for releases through 2026, and no representative current audience survey establishes whether viewers generally want more or less sexual content. The clearest answer is therefore qualified: sex scenes are back in the conversation and in some prominent stories, but a wider numerical comeback has not been demonstrated.
