The Obama Foundation’s timeline marks the date and shows a photograph captioned “Barack and Michelle Obama on their wedding day”; the Barack Obama Presidential Library identifies Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago as the church where they were married. Michelle Obama later recalled a gathering of more than 300 friends and family, with neighbors playing jazz at the reception.
Wedding photos and the two locations named by official sources
The Obama Foundation’s “Chicago: Where it Began” timeline dates the wedding day to October 3, 1992, associates that day with the South Shore Cultural Center, and captions an image “Barack and Michelle Obama on their wedding day.” The photograph’s caption identifies the couple, but the page does not establish that the South Shore Cultural Center was the ceremony venue or specify the role it played that day.
The Barack Obama Presidential Library biography says Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson were married in 1992 at Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. BET’s 2012 anniversary gallery also identifies October 3, 1992, and Trinity United Church of Christ. Taken together, the sources name both the church and the South Shore Cultural Center in accounts of the wedding day; they do not explicitly explain how the locations relate.
For the Foundation’s wedding-day image, use its caption as the available identification. Images in other galleries may have separate credits: BET’s lead wedding-related image is credited “REUTERS/Obama For America /Landov.” A credit is not a reuse license, so check the rights and image-specific terms before republishing any photograph.

Michelle Obama’s recollection of the wedding
In her 2018 memoir Becoming, Michelle Obama describes marrying Barack at Trinity United Church of Christ on an October Saturday before more than 300 friends and family. Her account brings together extended family, school and work friends, and Kenyan relatives meeting the Robinson family. The number of guests and the description of those present are her firsthand recollections, not an independently verified count.
She also recalls that neighbors played jazz later at the reception. The detail adds a personal glimpse of the celebration, but it comes from the memoir rather than a separate performance record.

The vow Michelle Obama remembered
The Obama Foundation attributes this retrospective recollection to Mrs. Obama: “Barack didn’t pledge riches, only a life that would be interesting. On that promise he delivered.” It is a memory quoted on the Foundation’s wedding timeline, not a transcript of the ceremony.

The Obama Foundation timeline is the directly captioned official source for a wedding-day image. The Presidential Library supplies biographical context about the marriage and lists Becoming among Michelle Obama’s works. For a fuller personal account of the people and celebration, consult a legitimate edition of her memoir. BET’s anniversary gallery is a secondary collection, and its image credits should be kept with any image used under appropriate permission.
