There is no comparable, current public total here that settles which Obama has sold more books across their full catalogs. Publisher figures do show blockbuster individual titles: Michelle Obama’s Becoming had sold more than 17 million units worldwide across formats by 2022, while Barack Obama’s A Promised Land was reported above 8 million worldwide copies and Dreams from My Father above 7 million. Those are different title milestones, not like-for-like author totals.
What the published figures show
| Book or group | Publisher-reported figure | Scope and measure |
|---|---|---|
| Michelle Obama, Becoming | More than 17 million units | Worldwide, across formats, reported by Penguin Random House in July 2022; the U.S. edition alone was nearly 10 million units. Penguin Random House |
| Barack Obama, A Promised Land | More than 8 million copies | Worldwide; the same publisher announcement reports more than 5 million in the United States. The cited paperback-announcement excerpt does not give its date. Penguin Random House |
| Barack Obama, Dreams from My Father | Over 7 million copies | Worldwide, in a Penguin Random House report from 2021. Penguin Random House |
| Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope | Nearly 7 million copies | Combined U.S. figure, stated by Penguin Random House; the cited tag-page excerpt does not date the statement. It is not a worldwide total. Penguin Random House |
The figures count different things and cover different markets and reporting dates. Becoming is counted as units across formats; other announcements use “copies.” The available figures therefore cannot establish an overall winner by comparing or adding them.

Why the launch figures for A Promised Land are different
Penguin Random House reported that A Promised Land sold 1,710,443 units in the United States and Canada during its first week in 2020, across all formats and editions. In a separate first-month report, the publisher said the book had sold 3,320,000 units in the United States and Canada and reported 7.55 million copies in print worldwide. Penguin Random House
These are launch-period measures, not current lifetime totals. “Copies in print” means copies printed or supplied, not necessarily copies sold, so the 7.55 million print figure should not be treated as a sales figure.
#1 Best Overall
What can be said about Barack Obama’s other books?
Penguin Random House identifies Dreams from My Father, The Audacity of Hope, and A Promised Land as major New York Times bestsellers. Penguin Random House That bestseller status does not supply a comparable lifetime sales total for his complete catalog. The publisher’s nearly 7 million U.S. copies figure applies only to Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, who has sold more overall?
The available publisher reports do not answer that question. Becoming has a clearly stated worldwide milestone, but comparing it with one or two Barack Obama titles would omit his other books and mix figures with different scopes and dates. No same-date, same-measure total for all books by both authors is established by these figures.
