Barack Obama remembered Rob Reiner for both his celebrated work in film and television and his commitment to acting on his belief in people. Nancy Pelosi’s tribute honored Reiner and his wife, Michele, for their creative partnership, family life and civic advocacy.
What Barack Obama said about Rob Reiner
Former President Barack Obama’s tribute connected Reiner’s screen legacy with the values he brought to public life. The Associated Press reported that Obama posted the statement on X:

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”
Obama’s words cast Reiner’s work as more than a catalogue of popular stories: they emphasized the belief in people that, in Obama’s view, also shaped Reiner’s activism. The AP roundup of tributes also includes a shorter statement from Pelosi.

How Nancy Pelosi honored Rob and Michele Reiner
Pelosi’s remarks in the Congressional Record treated Rob and Michele Reiner as partners in family life, creative work and public advocacy. She called Rob “creative, funny, and beloved,” and described Michele as “an indispensable partner, intellectual resource, and loving wife.”
In her fuller statement, Pelosi connected the couple’s civic work to free expression and artists’ rights:
Rank #2
“Civically, Rob and Michele were fierce champions of the First Amendment and the creative rights of artists, never wavering in their belief that freedom of expression is essential to a vibrant and just society.”
Pelosi also credited the Reiners with supporting California’s Proposition 10, which directed tobacco-tax revenues toward early-childhood development through the First 5 initiative, and with opposing Proposition 8. These points are part of her tribute, rather than a detailed account of either measure’s legislative history. Her remarks were entered into the record on December 17, 2025. The career behind the tributes
Reiner became widely known as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on Norman Lear’s sitcom All in the Family (1971–79). The Television Academy associates the role with two of his Emmy wins. He later built a directing career across comedy, drama and films that became enduring favorites.
- This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
- The Sure Thing (1985)
- Stand by Me (1986)
- The Princess Bride (1987)
- When Harry Met Sally… (1989)
- Misery (1990)
- A Few Good Men (1992)
He also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment in 1987. The Television Academy profile lists three Emmy wins and eight nominations; the page does not state the year of those totals. The Television Academy’s biography describes his work as a performer, writer, director, producer and activist.

The activism recalled in Pelosi’s tribute
Pelosi’s account highlighted the Reiners’ support for Proposition 10 and First 5, as well as their opposition to Proposition 8. The Television Academy’s profile separately identifies Reiner’s advocacy for early-childhood education and marriage equality. Together, the sources show why tributes to him often joined his creative achievements with his civic commitments, while placing specific claims about the propositions in Pelosi’s own remarks.
