Barack Obama praised Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX halftime show for depicting community and inclusion through scenes rather than delivering an explicit political speech. He said its everyday, intergenerational images showed what community can look like, and connected that idea to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Beloved Community.”
What was Obama’s verdict?
In an interview with podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama described the performance as a strong example of coming together amid divisive politics. The Daily Beast reported his remarks on February 16, 2026; the primary interview recording or transcript was not independently reviewed.
“It was smart because it wasn’t preaching, it was showing, it was demonstrating and displaying: ‘This is what a community is.’”
Obama’s point was that the show conveyed a social idea by putting people and relationships onstage, rather than by spelling out a political argument. He said viewers who did not speak Spanish and had never been to Puerto Rico could still recognize that communal message.

Which scenes stood out to him?
Obama pointed to an elderly woman serving a drink and children dancing with their grandmothers. He described the images as intergenerational: the show placed different ages together in familiar acts of care and celebration.
He also invoked Dr. King’s “Beloved Community,” describing it as a community that is not perfect and can be messy. In this context, Obama used the phrase to frame the performance’s vision as one of shared belonging, not a claim that real communities are free of conflict.

Was Obama calling the performance political?
Not in the sense of praising it as a direct political speech. As reported by The Daily Beast, Obama said the show “wasn’t political” and emphasized that it demonstrated community rather than preaching. That is his characterization of the performance; the scenes can still carry cultural meaning without amounting to an explicit partisan message.
When and where did the performance take place?
The NFL identifies Bad Bunny as the Apple Music Super Bowl LX halftime headliner. The performance took place on February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Obama’s comments were reported eight days later.

What cultural context did Bad Bunny give before the show?
Before the performance, Bad Bunny told the Associated Press that his album Debí Tirar Más Fotos reflected an effort to reconnect with his identity, history, and culture. At an Apple Music press event, he said, “You always have to be proud of who you are and where you’re from,” then added, “But don’t let that limit where you can go.” AP reported that the album won the 2026 Grammy for Album of the Year.
Those remarks offer context for the cultural framing around the performance, but they are Bad Bunny’s comments—not a reason to attribute a specific album reference to Obama.
