Anthony Michael Hall recalled that Chevy Chase teased him about going through puberty while they filmed National Lampoon’s Vacation. Hall told the story as an embarrassing, comic memory—not as evidence of a lasting feud—and made clear that he still loves Chase.
What Chevy Chase said to Anthony Michael Hall on Vacation
Hall played Rusty Griswold, the son of Chase’s Clark Griswold, in the 1983 comedy. During a later Fan Expo conversation, Hall recalled that puberty began changing his appearance while the movie was being made. “Puberty kicked in for me,” he said, in a remark attributed to an Entertainment Weekly interview by Men’s Journal.
Hall said Chase noticed the changes and teased him, including with remarks written in an autograph. Dana Barron, who played Hall’s screen sister Audrey, also recalled Chase commenting on Hall’s pimples. The Independent’s account of the Fan Expo conversation describes the exchange in that teasing context.
The ages in the coverage refer to different people: The Independent describes Rusty as 12, while Men’s Journal says Hall was 14 at the time. Hall’s age and the character’s age should not be conflated.

Hall’s recollection was affectionate, not an accusation of hostility
Hall addressed Chase directly at Fan Expo: “This is why I love being your son for 40 years. I love you,” The Independent reported. That affection fits with Hall’s other public comments about his co-star, though those comments do not independently establish the exact wording of the autograph or each exchange on set.
On the June 19, 2024 episode of Fly on the Wall, Hall described working with Chase on Vacation as a great experience and characterized Chase as sarcastic and snarky. In a February 28, 2025 interview with Entrepreneur, Hall said, “When I worked with him in 1983 on the film, that whole experience was incredible.” He also said he had looked up to Chase and described his sarcasm as sharp and wide-ranging.
