AMC Chief Content Officer Elizabeth Frank said the company never expected its Dune: Part Two sandworm popcorn bucket to become an online joke. The provocative “sickos” wording in the headline is not a verbatim quote from Frank: in remarks reported from an interview with Variety, she said AMC “would have never created it knowing it would be celebrated or mocked.”
What did the AMC executive say?
Frank’s comments addressed the unexpected reaction to the sandworm-shaped souvenir bucket, released in February 2024 alongside Dune: Part Two. ComicBook.com reproduced this statement from her Variety interview:
“We continue to learn and evolve. We would have never imagined the Dune thing. We would have never created it knowing it would be celebrated or mocked.”
That is the basis for the headline’s blunt paraphrase. Frank did not use the word “sickos” in the quoted remarks; the reporting presents her point as surprise at how people responded, not an accusation against the audience. ComicBook.com’s April 12, 2024 account identifies her as AMC’s chief content officer and attributes the interview to Variety.

Did AMC regret making the bucket?
Frank’s remarks establish that AMC had not anticipated the sexualized jokes and memes that followed the design. They do not amount to a statement that AMC regretted producing the souvenir. She described the reaction as something the company could neither foresee nor deliberately manufacture.
Asked about Saturday Night Live parodying the bucket, Frank called the sketch a “seal of approval.” She answered “Absolutely,” then added: “And you couldn’t make it happen if you wanted to. It wouldn’t be fair to pull our creative talent aside to say, ‘We hope it makes SNL.’” Her answer frames the attention as welcome recognition after the fact—not a marketing outcome AMC had planned.

Why did the Dune bucket go viral?
The bucket’s sculpted sandworm form became a ready-made subject for sexualized interpretations, jokes and memes online. Saturday Night Live then turned the conversation into a sketch. The coverage supports that sequence, but it does not establish that AMC designed the bucket to invite those jokes.
The item also sat within a growing market for theatrical novelty buckets and licensed film collectibles. A Vanity Fair feature published October 24, 2024 describes the Dune bucket as part of a broader trend involving movie studios, theater chains and specialist manufacturers. The appeal can extend beyond holding popcorn: collectors interviewed by the magazine cited uniqueness and souvenir value, while the striking film tie-in helped make this particular container a conversation piece.

Was it a practical popcorn container?
Its unusual shape made access less convenient than a standard tub. Rob Bennett, AMC’s director of food and beverage product strategy, told Vanity Fair: “We knew it was kind of difficult to stick your hand in there. But at the same time, it was possible.” A collector interviewed in the same feature also identified cleanability as an important consideration. Those are reported perspectives, not evidence that every buyer valued the same things.
Novelty buckets trade some everyday convenience for distinctive design and keepsake appeal. In this case, the shape was central to both the item’s collectible character and the public conversation around it.

Did the bucket sell out, and how many were sold?
MobileSyrup reported on April 9, 2024, that the bucket sold out at theaters across North America, but supplied no unit total. The reviewed reporting provides no attributable sales or revenue figure for the Dune item. MobileSyrup’s report also reproduces Frank’s remarks through the Variety interview.
A $50 sellout figure sometimes mentioned in coverage of AMC collectibles applies to a different item: Vanity Fair reported that an AMC R2-D2 popcorn bucket sold out at $50 per vessel in 2019. That price and sellout should not be attributed to the Dune bucket.

Frank’s central point was that AMC did not make the Dune bucket expecting it to be celebrated, mocked or parodied. The public response became part of the souvenir’s story, but the reporting describes that outcome as unexpected. Her comments also reflect a practical distinction between creating a licensed collectible and being able to engineer the kind of cultural attention that earns an SNL sketch.
