What is confirmed about the new Star Wars trilogy?
Trade reports identify Kinberg as the writer and say Watts is attached to direct the first film. TheWrap reported the director news on September 26, 2026, and Variety reported Watts’ involvement two days later. TheWrap said Lucasfilm declined to comment, so these are reported attachments rather than a formal studio announcement in those articles.
The project was first reported in November 2024, when Gizmodo’s io9 said Kinberg would write and produce a trilogy with Kathleen Kennedy. That report described the project as being at a very early stage. Gizmodo/io9’s 2024 report, TheWrap’s September 2026 report, and Variety’s report establish the reported development and filmmaker attachments, not a release schedule or production start.
Will the films be Episodes 10, 11, and 12?
That remains unsettled. The 2024 io9 report said sources disagreed: some described the trilogy as the next numbered entries in the Skywalker Saga, while others characterized it as a standalone series. TheWrap’s September 2026 coverage still called the numbering disputed and referred to the project as a “new saga.” Variety reported a new Star Wars film in development without assigning it an episode number.

Until Lucasfilm identifies the films as Episodes 10, 11, and 12, that label should be treated as a possibility—not an official title or settled description.
What has Kathleen Kennedy said about Kinberg’s work?
In a January 2026 interview excerpt reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, then-Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy described the script’s development at that time:

Rotten Tomatoes also reports that Kennedy confirmed it would be a new trilogy. Her remarks describe the project’s status in January 2026; they do not establish the script’s current status. What is still unknown?
- Whether Lucasfilm will designate the films Episodes 10, 11, and 12 or treat them as a standalone saga.
- The plot, setting, and relationship to characters or events from earlier Star Wars films.
- Any confirmed cast, release date, or production start.
- The script’s status after Kennedy’s January 2026 comments.
Accordingly, the most precise description is a trilogy in development, written by Kinberg, with Watts reported to direct its first film. Its episode numbering and place in the Star Wars continuity remain open questions.
