“22” is the count in Startefacts’ January 20, 2024 article, not an official Academy tally. The Academy awards Best Picture, not a war-film category, and the count depends on how broadly a writer defines “war movie.” The article’s exact film order is not available in the text that can be verified here, so reproducing a ranked list would risk inventing it.
Why there is no official count of war-film Best Picture winners
The Academy’s Best Picture award recognizes a film as the year’s top picture; it does not classify that film by genre. “War movie” is an editorial label. A narrow definition might require substantial action at the front, while a broader one can include stories about civilians, veterans, or life on the homefront.
Startefacts framed its list as a broad selection: some films, it said, go directly into battle, while others focus on human stories away from the frontlines. Its figure of 22 belongs to that approach, rather than to an official Academy category or census. The article, by Aaren Gimenez, was published January 20, 2024. Read the Startefacts article.
What makes a film count as a war movie?
Lists can differ without disagreeing about a film’s plot or Oscar win. They may use different thresholds for how central war must be to the story, and what kinds of conflict or consequences qualify.

- Combat on screen: Does the film depict active fighting, or is war mainly a distant threat or context?
- People away from the front: Should films about civilians, veterans, or the homefront count even when battle is not the focus?
- Kind of conflict: Do historical rebellions or ancient conflicts fit the same category as modern warfare?
- War’s importance to the plot: Is war the subject of the film, or simply a significant backdrop?
Those choices explain why a broad list can reach a different total from a list limited to films centered on combat. They also mean that a ranking is an editorial judgment, not an Academy ranking of war films.
What can be confirmed about the ranking?
The Startefacts page available for verification shows its headline, author, date, and broad introduction, but not the ranked entries. Its exact order and item-by-item reasoning therefore cannot be confirmed here. Rather than supply a plausible-looking list from memory, this article leaves the ordering unresolved.

A separate guide, Oscar-Winning War Movies, published by Unanswered.io on July 18, 2026, identifies The Hurt Locker as the most recent Best Picture winner it classifies as a war film and reports that it won six Oscars. Those are the guide’s claims under its definition; they are not a formal Academy designation of the film as a war movie. Read the Unanswered.io guide.

Check the author’s inclusion rule before comparing totals or rankings. A list that includes films about war’s effects away from combat is answering a broader question than one restricted to battle-centered stories. And unless a list explains its ranking criteria, its order should be treated as an individual critical judgment—not as an official measure of historical importance, combat realism, or Academy recognition.
