Watch the ten released Planet of the Apes feature films in release order: begin with the 1968 original, follow the original series through 1973, then watch the separate 2001 reimagining and the connected reboot-era films from 2011 onward. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) is the latest released entry in this list.
Planet of the Apes movies in release order

- Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
- Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

This release-year sequence follows Disney+ Japan’s official franchise guide, which lists ten released films. It is the straightforward choice for a first watch because it follows the order audiences encountered the movies.
How the films fit together
The original five films (1968–1973)
The first five releases form the original series: start with the 1968 Planet of the Apes, then continue through Beneath, Escape, Conquest, and Battle. Time travel complicates the story chronology, so the films’ in-universe sequence is not simply the same as their release order.
The 2001 reimagining
Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes is a distinct reimagining, not a continuation of the 1968 series. Watch it after the original five if you are following release order; it is not required to understand the later reboot films.

The Caesar-era films and Kingdom
Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes tell a connected story centered on Caesar. Disney’s franchise guide describes Rise as the origin-focused first entry, Dawn as taking place ten years after the uprising, and War as the trilogy’s concluding chapter.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes follows those films in release order. Its story is set several generations after Caesar’s reign and follows a young ape in a world where apes are dominant and humans live in the shadows. 20th Century Studios gives its US release date as May 10, 2024, on its official film page.
Should you watch Kingdom after War?
Yes, if you are watching by release order: War (2017) comes before Kingdom (2024). The two films belong to the reboot-era sequence, but Kingdom is set several generations after Caesar’s reign rather than following immediately after the events of War.

For a first viewing, use the list above. The original cycle’s time-travel plot makes its in-story chronology less straightforward than release order, while Rise, Dawn, and War form a connected Caesar-era story. A chronological rewatch is a separate way to explore continuity; it does not change the release-date order.
