There is no universally strongest Pokémon type. Type matchups, dual typing, training, team composition, and the game’s battle mechanics all affect what works. This is a qualitative ranking for broad usefulness across Pokémon video games—not an official list, a measured statistic, or a competitive tier list.
The order weighs offensive matchup coverage, defensive value, and usefulness on a balanced team. It is a practical comparison, not a claim that every Pokémon of a higher-ranked type will outperform one below it.
How to read this ranking
In Pokémon battles, type matchups affect how much damage a move deals: a favorable matchup can increase damage, a resisted attack deals less, and some attacks do not affect certain targets. A Pokémon’s type therefore matters, but it does not determine the outcome by itself. The official Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl battle guide explains matchup damage, dual typing, and team coverage in that game context.
Each position below is an editorial judgment based on three considerations: offensive coverage, defensive strengths and liabilities, and the type’s potential contribution to team flexibility. The official sources explain type mechanics but do not publish a cross-game scoring system or an overall ranking of all 18 types. A named game, format, Pokémon, move pool, ability, or team goal can produce a different answer.

The official Pokédex lists 18 video-game types: Normal, Ground, Grass, Ice, Fire, Fighting, Water, Psychic, Electric, Ghost, Bug, Dragon, Flying, Dark, Rock, Steel, Poison, and Fairy. Its Pokédex lets readers explore types and weaknesses. The older Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide describes 17 types for those games; it is not the current roster count.
All 18 Pokémon types, ranked
1. Steel
Steel earns the top spot for its defensive potential: a strong collection of resistances and an immunity can make it valuable for absorbing attacks and creating safer opportunities for a team. Its main limitation is that defensive strength does not automatically provide broad offensive pressure. Steel works best when teammates cover opponents its attacks struggle to threaten.
2. Fairy
Fairy combines useful offensive matchups with a defensive profile that includes an immunity and several resistances. That makes it versatile both as an attacking option and as part of a team’s defensive plan. Its weaknesses and the moves available to a particular Pokémon still matter.
3. Water
Water is a dependable all-purpose choice: it has useful offensive targets and can fit a wide range of team plans. It is not without drawbacks, but its mix of attacking and defensive utility makes it less dependent on one narrow role than many types.

Rank #2

- 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
4. Ground
Ground offers strong offensive utility and an immunity that can create valuable switch-in opportunities. Its weaknesses and the presence of targets that blunt Ground attacks keep it below the very top, but it can supply a team with both pressure and a useful defensive angle.
5. Flying
Flying brings a useful immunity and can help teams manage certain attacks and matchups. Its attacking value is more situational than the types above it, so a Flying-type Pokémon is most effective when its other type, moves, or teammates fill the gaps.
6. Fire
Fire has appealing offensive matchups and can threaten opponents that resist or pressure other members of a team. Several weaknesses make it less comfortable defensively, so it often benefits from partners that can switch into attacks aimed at it.
7. Fighting
Fighting gives teams meaningful offensive coverage and can punish a range of targets. Its defensive profile is less forgiving, and some opponents resist or avoid its attacks. It ranks as a strong specialist rather than a universally safe choice.
Rank #3
- 50 assorted Pokemon cards
- Bundle with an LCC deck box that holds upto 100 Pokemon cards
- 1 Double rare legendary Pokemon card
8. Ghost
Ghost’s immunities and useful matchup interactions can make it a valuable tactical type. Its effectiveness depends on the opponents it faces and the rest of its team; it is not a substitute for broad coverage on its own.
9. Electric
Electric offers useful offensive pressure, while an immunity can add defensive utility. Its overall value is more matchup-dependent than that of higher-ranked types, so teams should account for opponents that resist or are immune to Electric attacks.
10. Dragon
Dragon can be a powerful offensive identity, but its position reflects the importance of counterplay and team context: a type’s reputation or individual Pokémon’s strength is not the same as universal type advantage. A Dragon-type Pokémon’s secondary type and moves can change its practical role considerably.
11. Psychic
Psychic can provide useful attacking coverage, but its defensive and matchup liabilities make it a less universal pick. It can still be valuable when a team needs its particular coverage or has partners that handle its difficult matchups.

12. Poison
Poison has defensive resistances and useful matchup applications, but its offensive reach is comparatively specialized. It can be a sound team choice when those specific strengths answer a need rather than as a default for broad coverage.
13. Rock
Rock can apply pressure against selected targets, but its defensive weaknesses make it harder to treat as a reliable switch-in across varied battles. Its utility rises when a Pokémon’s other type or team support compensates for that fragility.
14. Ice
Ice is valuable for the targets it can threaten, but its defensive profile is difficult to rely on. It often works best as coverage on a Pokémon whose primary type or role brings other advantages, rather than as a team’s defensive foundation.
15. Grass
Grass can deliver important matchup coverage and has useful resistances, yet it also faces several common weaknesses. Its value depends heavily on the opponents at hand and whether teammates can cover the attacks that trouble it.

16. Dark
Dark has useful matchup interactions and an immunity, but this broad ranking places it lower because those strengths are more role-specific than the combined utility of types above it. A particular game or team can make Dark much more valuable.
17. Bug
Bug offers some worthwhile offensive and defensive interactions, but its overall coverage and resilience are less consistently useful under this broad rubric. Individual Bug-type Pokémon can still excel through their secondary type, abilities, stats, and moves.
18. Normal
Normal has a notably simple defensive profile, including an immunity but also a weakness, while its attacks face a key immunity. That makes it less compelling as a stand-alone source of matchup coverage in this ranking. Normal-type Pokémon can nevertheless be effective because species traits and moves matter as much as the type label.

Dual typing changes the matchup
A dual-type Pokémon combines the defensive modifiers of both its types. A resistance from one type can cancel a weakness from the other, while a shared weakness can magnify incoming damage. The official Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide illustrates both effects. As a result, a type’s single-type profile is not a reliable description of every Pokémon that includes it.

Training and team coverage matter
Pokémon Support says video-game strength depends on how a Pokémon is trained and the challenge it faces: “In the video game, it depends a lot on how you train your Pokémon.” Its guidance is about Pokémon strength, not an endorsement of a particular type ranking. A balanced team also benefits from varied Pokémon types and move types so it can respond to different opponents.
Battle systems are not identical
A type chart should not be assumed to apply unchanged across every Pokémon game. The official Pokémon Link: Battle! type chart explicitly limits itself to that game. Pokémon Legends: Z-A describes real-time battles in which timing, reach, areas of effect, and move execution time affect battle decisions; those considerations sit alongside type matchups rather than replacing them. See the official Legends: Z-A battle mechanics overview.
Quick Recap
How to use the ranking when building a team
- Start with the game and challenge. Use the type chart or guidance for the specific title and battle format, not a chart labeled for another game.
- Look at the Pokémon’s full typing. Check both types before assuming a weakness, resistance, or immunity applies in the expected way.
- Plan coverage across the team. Choose Pokémon and moves that can answer threats your other team members struggle against.
- Consider the Pokémon, not just its type. Training, moves, abilities, and the task it needs to handle can matter more than a type’s position here.
