Yes. Director Fede Álvarez said the home-entertainment version of Alien: Romulus improved some shots of Rook, the android modeled on Ian Holm’s likeness. He attributed the changes to extra post-production work after the theatrical version reached cinemas, where some computer-generated effects were more noticeable than he wanted.
What changed in the home version?
The revision concerned Rook’s visual effects, including the digital use of Ian Holm’s likeness. Holm played Ash in the original Alien. Álvarez told TheWrap that some theatrical shots revealed the CG intervention more than he wanted. He described the home version as an improvement, but did not provide a frame-by-frame list of altered shots.
Why did the effects change?
Álvarez said the team ran out of time in post-production to finish some shots to his satisfaction before the theatrical release. He said he persuaded the studio to put more money and time into the effects work for home entertainment. That is the director’s account of the production process, rather than an independently verified production history.

He also acknowledged why some viewers had reacted negatively to the theatrical effects: “I wasn’t 100% happy with some of the shots, where you could feel a bit more the CG intervention. So, for people that react negatively, I don’t blame them.”
Is the home version better?
Álvarez’s verdict was that the revised work was “way better,” and that it was made for the home release. That is a qualitative assessment from the director, not a controlled comparison. The available reporting does not establish that every viewer will prefer the revision or that it eliminates all criticism of Rook’s appearance.

Where can viewers find the revised version?
The digital and physical home-release path is established, but specific dates and edition details vary by source and market.
- UK digital release: A September 26, 2024 announcement from 20th Century Studios UK said the film would arrive at UK digital retailers on October 15, 2024. It named Prime Video, Sky Store, Apple TV, and Google Play. That date applies to the UK announcement, not every territory.
- Physical media: TheWrap reported in January 2025 that the film was available for purchase, and Weyland Uplink / Scified reported physical-media availability on January 22, 2025. A Blu-ray or 4K UHD edition is therefore a relevant way to watch the home release, but current retailer stock and the exact effects version on a given listing have not been established.
Do all editions include the same effects and extras?
That is not confirmed by the reporting. The studio’s UK announcement described filmmaker featurettes, behind-the-scenes material, and extended or deleted scenes, while cautioning that bonus features may differ by product and retailer. The available sources also do not reliably confirm that every digital, Blu-ray, and UHD edition contains identical effects revisions or bonus content. Check the specific retailer and edition listing before buying if those details matter.
