James McAvoy’s Speak No Evil is the 2024 English-language film written and directed by James Watkins, adapted from the 2022 Danish film. It keeps the unsettling setup of holiday acquaintances and a country-house invitation, but it is not a shot-for-shot copy—and it changes how the visitors respond when the weekend turns frightening.
1. It is a remake of the 2022 Danish film
The 2024 film adapts the screenplay of the Danish Speak No Evil, originally titled Gæsterne. Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup wrote the original screenplay; James Watkins wrote and directed the new film. 2. James McAvoy plays the host, Paddy
McAvoy stars as Paddy, one half of the family that invites the visitors to their country home. The studio’s synopsis presents him as a charismatic host whose hospitality conceals a disturbing secret. That contrast—warm welcome against growing unease—is central to the film’s premise: Universal Pictures’ official film page.
3. The visitors are the Dalton family
The story follows the Daltons after they meet another family while on holiday and accept an invitation to spend a weekend at the hosts’ home. Mackenzie Davis plays Louise Dalton, Scoot McNairy plays her husband Ben, and Alix West Lefler plays their daughter Agnes. Their hosts are Paddy, played by McAvoy; Ciara, played by Aisling Franciosi; and their son Ant, played by Dan Hough. The cast and premise are listed in Universal’s official synopsis.

4. The setup is familiar, but the film is a reimagining
Both films begin with families who meet on holiday and later reunite for a weekend visit that becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Watkins’s film retains that underlying situation while changing elements of the story. Calling it a remake is accurate, but it should not be mistaken for a scene-by-scene copy; Watkins has also described his approach as a reimagining. 5. The major difference is the visitors’ response

The remake changes the original’s ending and gives the visiting family a more active fight for survival. In the 2022 film, the conclusion is bleak; Watkins’s version takes a different direction by emphasizing the Daltons’ resistance. This is the most consequential distinction between the two films, rather than a minor change in detail. 6. The difference is an adaptation choice, not a national rule
The ending can invite comparisons between the films’ approaches to suspense and character agency, but it does not establish a general rule about Danish and American—or English-language—horror. The available account supports a narrower point: Watkins chose to change the visitors’ response and the ending for this adaptation. Both films share the premise, while the 2024 version makes a different choice about how the family confronts danger.
