This is a dated guide to seven streaming picks for the weekend of July 25, 2025—not a list of what is new this weekend now. The choices span comedy, fantasy, historical adventure, horror-comedy, and documentary, with films and series across several major services.

At a glance: the seven picks

Title Format Service in the July 25, 2025 roundup Best fit
Happy Gilmore 2 Film Netflix A broad comedy sequel with familiar characters
The Phoenician Scheme Film Peacock Viewers drawn to eccentric, stylized espionage comedy
The Sandman season 2, volume 2 Series episodes Netflix Existing viewers ready for the fantasy adaptation’s conclusion
Washington Black Series Hulu in the U.S.; Disney+ internationally, according to the roundup Historical adventure with a journey across the Atlantic
Death of a Unicorn Film HBO Max Dark, grotesque comedy
Acapulco season 4 Series Apple TV+ A returning comedy-drama with a resort setting
Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War Documentary series Prime Video Nonfiction about religion, youth culture, and institutional influence

The picks and service labels reflect TechRadar’s July 25, 2025 roundup; they are historical, not confirmation of current catalog availability. Read the original roundup.

Films: comedy, espionage, and a deadly unicorn

Happy Gilmore 2 — Netflix

Adam Sandler returns as Happy, the hockey player turned golfer. Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Ben Stiller are among the returning cast, with Margaret Qualley also appearing. Netflix announced the film’s premiere for July 25, 2025. It is the straightforward choice for a broad comedy sequel or a return to familiar characters; the roundup does not suggest that rewatching the original is a prerequisite. Netflix’s announcement confirms the date.

The Phoenician Scheme — Peacock

Wes Anderson’s espionage comedy centers on a wealthy businessman’s daughter and sole heir, who becomes a target of rival powers and assassins. Its stylized, eccentric approach makes it the pick for viewers who want a feature rather than another season of television.

Death of a Unicorn — HBO Max

Led by Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, this A24 film builds its conflict around a unicorn and the question of whether it should be kept alive or harvested for a possible cancer cure. The roundup frames it as dark, grotesque comedy, a very different mood from a conventional fantasy film.

Series: a fantasy finale, a historical escape, and a resort comeback

The Sandman season 2, volume 2 — Netflix

This is the second half of season two and the conclusion of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel. It is best suited to viewers already following the story or comfortable entering a high-fantasy narrative midstream. The source material is available as The Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman; reading them is optional, not a stated requirement for watching the adaptation.

Washington Black — Hulu / Disney+

Adapted from Esi Edugyan’s novel, the story follows the enslaved title character’s escape and journey, moving from Barbados in 1829 to Nova Scotia in 1837. It is the historical-adventure pick in this group. The July roundup labels the series Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally; those regional labels should not be taken as a guarantee of present-day availability, since streaming rights and catalogs can change.

Acapulco season 4 — Apple TV+

The fourth and final season follows Máximo as he works to restore the Las Colinas resort, with flashbacks to 1986. It offers a returning comedy-drama and a dual-timeline structure. The season was listed for July 23, two days before the Friday roundup, in Rotten Tomatoes’ July calendar; it was therefore not a Friday premiere. Rotten Tomatoes’ July 2025 calendar provides the date.

Documentary: Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War

Prime Video’s four-episode season focuses on a large evangelical youth organization founded by Ron Luce in the 1990s. It is the nonfiction option for viewers interested in religion, youth culture, and how institutions influence young people. Those details describe the focus as presented in the roundup; they should not be treated as a neutral summary of every claim made in the series.

How to choose

  • Want a film? Choose among the comedy sequel, Anderson’s eccentric espionage story, and the horror-comedy of Death of a Unicorn.
  • Already following a series? The Sandman volume concludes its adaptation, while Acapulco begins its final season.
  • Prefer a historical journey or nonfiction? Washington Black is the historical-adventure choice; Shiny Happy People is the documentary series.
  • Choosing by service? Check the service labels in the table against your own region and current catalog; the list records July 2025 availability descriptions, not present-day access.

The Sandman volume was already available by the roundup’s date, and Acapulco season 4 was listed for July 23. The July 25 date is the publication date of the guide and the premiere date Netflix gave for Happy Gilmore 2, not the premiere date for all seven picks. Rotten Tomatoes’ July calendar lists the month’s releases.
