Zooey Deschanel has two children with film producer Jacob Pechenik: daughter Elsie Otter and son Charlie Wolf. Public reporting gives their birth months and years, but not both exact birthdays. Deschanel has also shared a few affectionate, time-specific observations about them in interviews.
Who are Zooey Deschanel’s children?
Deschanel and Pechenik are the parents of Elsie Otter Pechenik and Charlie Wolf Pechenik. When Charlie’s arrival was announced in May 2017, a family representative said that Deschanel, Pechenik and their daughter Elsie were “overjoyed to welcome the newest member of their family,” Entertainment Tonight reported. A contemporaneous TF1 report also named him Charlie Wolf and recalled Deschanel’s explanation that she and Pechenik both loved otters, which inspired Elsie’s middle name.
When were Elsie and Charlie born?
| Child | Reported birth period | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Elsie Otter Pechenik | July 2015 | A 2025 AOL profile reports her birth month and year; the sources cited here do not establish her exact birth day. |
| Charlie Wolf Pechenik | May 2017 | The AOL profile reports his birth month and year. His arrival was announced that month, but the sources cited here do not establish his exact birth day. |
Because exact birth dates are not established by these reports, they do not support a precise age calculation.
What has Deschanel said about her children?
Her 2020 observations
In a 2020 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Deschanel described Elsie as “obsessed with cats” and said she liked sparkly things. She described Charlie as loving dinosaurs and pretending to be one: “Loves dinosaurs, he pretends to be a dinosaur all the time.” Deschanel also said at the time that Elsie was highly independent, while Charlie was more inclined to hug and snuggle. These are her observations from that interview, not a report of the children’s present-day interests or personalities. The official transcript records the conversation.

A 2025 movie anecdote
A 2025 E! News report quoted Deschanel saying her children “weren’t really that into watching it,” referring to her film Elf. It is a comment about their response to that one movie, not evidence of their broader viewing tastes.
What is publicly reported about the family?
A 2025 AOL profile says Deschanel and Pechenik separated in 2019 and finalized their divorce in 2020. In 2023, Good Morning America described Deschanel and Jonathan Scott as engaged and referred to the blended family that includes her children and Pechenik. Those reports provide dated context; they do not establish current custody, household arrangements or private routines.
