What happened at the 2024 Oscars
At the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024, Pacino presented the final award. He announced Oppenheimer as Best Picture without first reading the ten nominees, an unusual transition that left some viewers wondering whether he had skipped the list accidentally.
The nominees were American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.
Why the producers chose not to repeat the names
Producer Molly McNearney told The Associated Press that the decision was intentional. The production team was worried the show would run long, and its view was that audiences had already seen clips of all ten Best Picture nominees earlier in the broadcast.

“It was a creative decision we made because we were very worried that the show was going to be long,” McNearney said. She added that viewers had seen all ten clip packages and that the team expected them to be ready to hear the winner. McNearney also apologized if the decision put Pacino in a difficult position.
What Pacino said after the ceremony
Pacino addressed the reaction in a statement after the ceremony, rather than explaining the choice onstage. As reported by the Associated Press, he said: “It was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony.”
He said he had followed the producers’ wishes for how the award should be presented. Pacino also acknowledged that a Best Picture nomination is a major milestone and said he understood why nominees might find the omission hurtful or feel slighted.

Based on Pacino’s statement and McNearney’s explanation, the omission was a production decision, not a confirmed onstage mistake or a choice Pacino made on his own. The producers believed the earlier film clips had already recognized the nominees and that skipping a second reading would help manage the show’s length.
