Aftersun is Charlotte Wells’s 2022 feature debut, a drama about an 11-year-old girl’s holiday with her father and the adult memories that later reshape her understanding of him. It is not a documentary, but its intimate, memory-framed storytelling gives it the texture of looking back at real family footage.
What is Aftersun about?
Sophie spends a holiday in Turkey with her father, Calum. During the trip, she experiences the familiar pleasures and frustrations of time together; years later, adult Sophie revisits those memories and tries to understand the person her younger self could not fully know. The film’s official synopsis describes this distance between childhood experience and adult reflection (A24).

Wells lets viewers notice tensions and absences without explaining every moment. The film does not settle on a single definitive account of Calum’s inner life, so interpretations of his behavior are best treated as readings rather than confirmed facts. Its emotional force comes partly from that gap: Sophie can remember what happened while still being unable to recover everything it meant.
Who made the film?
Charlotte Wells wrote and directed Aftersun, her feature debut. Paul Mescal plays Calum, Frankie Corio plays young Sophie, and Celia Rowlson-Hall plays adult Sophie. Producers include Adele Romanski, Amy Jackson, Barry Jenkins, and Mark Ceryak. The BFI lists MUBI as the UK distributor and A24 as the North American distributor, with BBC, BFI, and Creative Scotland among the production supporters (BFI film record).

When and where is the story set?
The holiday takes place in Turkey in the late 1990s, according to the BFI. The film does not confirm an exact year. Its music can suggest 1999, but that is an inference rather than an established date; BFI programme notes describe the timeframe as deliberately open (BFI programme notes).
The soundtrack evokes the tail end of Britpop and the surrounding pop culture. The BFI’s Sight and Sound feature names Blur, Aqua, and Bran Van 3000 among the artists associated with the film’s music (BFI feature). Rather than functioning only as a period checklist, the songs help give the memories their shifting, personal quality.

How does Aftersun tell its story?
The film moves between the holiday Sophie remembers and an adult perspective shaped by time, while family-video imagery adds another layer of looking back. Bright resort scenes and ordinary father-daughter exchanges sit beside moments that feel harder to interpret. Wells’s approach makes the viewer work with partial memories and clues, rather than pausing the story to provide a single explanation.
In a 2022 essay, Wells discussed the calibration of narrative layers and the gradual unveiling of character, as well as the possibility that audiences would not all read the film alike (Sight and Sound essay by Charlotte Wells). That openness is central to the experience: the film invites interpretation but does not require viewers to treat one reading as a hidden answer key.
