Who first came up with the letters TGIF is a separate, disputed question.
What did ABC’s TGIF stand for?
The initials were given a punchline that fit the programming: “Thank Goodness It’s Funny.” In an Entertainment Weekly oral history, Bob Iger, then ABC president, recalled proposing: “How about calling it ‘Thank Goodness It’s Funny’?”

That answer distinguishes the intended ABC expansion from the familiar expression “Thank God It’s Friday.” The latter was already part of the cultural landscape and helped shape the naming discussion; it was not the comedy block’s promoted meaning.
How did ABC arrive at the name?
TGIF gave ABC’s Friday-night sitcoms a shared identity. Entertainment Weekly dates the block’s official launch to September 22, 1989, with Full House, Family Matters, Perfect Strangers, and Just the Ten of Us in the initial lineup.

The name’s path is remembered differently by the people involved. Jim Janicek recalled considering many candidates and worrying about title clearance: “TGIF was on there; however, there was an existing restaurant chain, and there also was the existing phrase, ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ so part of me was concerned that we would not get through our title clearance side.”
Mark Zakarin, then a senior vice president of marketing at ABC Entertainment, recalled a standards concern about the word “God” and suggested “Thank Goodness It’s Friday” as an alternative. He put it this way: “There was some sensitivity that you could never use the word God.” Iger then recalled turning the initials toward the block’s comic identity with “Thank Goodness It’s Funny.” These are participants’ retrospective accounts, not a contemporaneous ABC legal or standards record.

Who came up with TGIF?
The first-proposer credit is contested in the oral history. Executive producer Robert L. Boyett said he personally created the phrase; Ted Harbert remembered Iger proposing the name in a marketing meeting; other accounts pointed to ABC’s on-air promotion group and Janicek. The most careful distinction is that Iger is associated with the “Funny” expansion, while recollections differ about who first proposed TGIF itself.
A 2025 Yahoo Entertainment report said Janicek revisited the story on Pod Meets World. According to that report, he recalled ABC executives Stu Brower and Iger telling him they had landed on TGIF, and believed Iger came up with “Thank Goodness It’s Funny.” This is a reported recollection, not a verified verbatim transcript of the podcast recording.

Why TGIF became more than four initials
The label connected separate sitcoms into a Friday-night event. Entertainment Weekly reported that ABC’s research department found audience flow of 90 percent or greater between half-hour shows, according to Zakarin’s recollection. The same oral history reported that the block drew 20 million viewers weekly in the 1991–92 season.
Those figures describe the periods and attributions in the oral history; they do not establish current viewership or availability. Entertainment Weekly also reported in 2015 that more than 800 hours of TGIF programming would arrive on Hulu beginning September 29 that year. That historical announcement does not establish what is streaming now.
