Hayley Erbert’s health emergency began after a performance in Washington, D.C., on December 6, 2023. Derek Hough said she had a cranial hematoma caused by a burst blood vessel and needed emergency surgery. She later underwent a second operation, returned to the couple’s Symphony of Dance tour in April 2024, and said in June 2026 that she felt strong and healthy. The couple has shared selected details; the precise hematoma location and a detailed long-term medical prognosis have not been disclosed.
December 6, 2023: Emergency after a Washington, D.C., performance
After a Symphony of Dance performance in Washington, D.C., Erbert became disoriented and was taken to a hospital. Hough said she had a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy, an operation in which part of the skull is removed. The couple’s public accounts do not specify the hematoma’s exact location or explain what caused the blood vessel to burst. ABC/GMA reported Hough’s account on December 16, 2023.
December 2023: Early recovery and a second operation
In a mid-December update, Hough said Erbert was doing well and shared video of them walking in Washington. He described the episode as life-threatening and said an implant would replace the section of skull removed during the craniectomy. His caption, reported by ABC/GMA, read: “Hayley is doing well. Her recovery process has been nothing short of a miracle.”
On December 21, Hough reported that Erbert had undergone a cranioplasty as planned. Unlike the emergency craniectomy, which removed a section of skull, the cranioplasty repaired the resulting skull defect. ABC/GMA placed the second procedure about two weeks after the first. Hough called it a milestone and expressed hope for her recovery; “full recovery” was his description of the hoped-for outcome, not a published medical prognosis. ABC News reported his December 21 update.

February 2024: Recovery included good and bad days
In a joint video, Erbert said her recovery was progressing but remained difficult at times, emotionally and physically. She recalled waking after surgery and seeing Hough at her bedside. “But I’m doing so much better every single day. Truly, there is so much progress every day,” she said, as reported by ABC/GMA on February 6, 2024. Her account describes her experience; it does not establish a clinical assessment or rule out later challenges.
April–May 2024: Cleared to return to the tour
In April, Erbert announced she had been cleared to rejoin the Symphony of Dance tour and planned to dance when it resumed on April 14 in Melbourne, Florida. “Hi everyone, I am so excited to announce that I have been cleared to rejoin the Symphony of Dance tour and I will be dancing when the tour begins on April 14 in Melbourne, Florida,” she said in an announcement reported by ABC/GMA.

The tour ended May 19. In a later reflection, Erbert described uncertainty about whether she would be able to return and gratitude for the medical team and specialists supporting her health and safety. Entertainment Tonight covered her return and the tour’s completion.
December 2024: A personal return to the Washington stage
About a year after the emergency, Hough and Erbert returned to the Washington stage associated with it during a later tour. They framed the visit as a personal commemoration. It was not reported as a medical follow-up. ABC News covered the couple’s reflection in December 2024.

January–June 2026: Reflections and latest health-specific update
In January 2026, ABC/GMA reported Erbert’s reflection on the two-year recovery period: she had reclaimed parts of herself she thought she might not find again and felt grateful for what her body had endured. The report also included an update on the couple’s family.
At the June 2026 Tribeca Festival premiere of The Symphony of Dance, Erbert told E! “I’m doing great now,” and said, “I feel really strong, really healthy.” These are her own words in an interview, not an independent medical evaluation. They are the latest health-specific public update located here, rather than proof that no later private or public development occurred. E! reported the interview on June 8, 2026.
