There is no well-supported, definitive ranking of eight “most controversial” Dandadan scenes. The clearest documented disputes concern sexual threat and nudity involving teenage characters, an unresolved hot-spring cliffhanger, and a separate music-likeness dispute involving X Japan. This selection distinguishes those reported controversies from scenes included for emotional intensity—notably Acrobatic Silky’s acclaimed backstory.
Which Dandadan scenes are controversial?
The strongest documented disagreements center on how the anime depicts sexual danger and teenage characters, especially in episodes 1, 9, and 12. Episode 18 prompted a different kind of concern: the resemblance of a fictional performance to X Japan. Other entries below are included because they are emotionally intense or illustrate the broader debate, not because evidence establishes equal levels of backlash. Coverage reports contrasting reactions, not a representative audience poll.
| Moment | What the disagreement concerns | What the available coverage establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Episode 1: alien abduction threat | Sexual threat and the framing of a teenage character | Reported objections to the scene’s sexual-assault themes and sexualization of underage characters |
| Episode 9: “Empty Space” return | Nudity, teenage characters, and adaptation fidelity | Reported split between viewers who praised the manga-faithful awkwardness and those uncomfortable with the depiction |
| Episode 12: hot-spring cliffhanger | Sexual peril left unresolved at the season’s end | Criticism of the distressing cliffhanger, alongside readings of sexual discomfort as part of a coming-of-age story |
| Recurring sexual-threat criticism | Use of sexual danger as a repeated plot device | Some critics object to the pattern; others see uncomfortable experiences as part of the coming-of-age treatment |
| Acrobatic Silky’s memories | Traumatic backstory and emotional intensity | Coverage describes the sequence as acclaimed, not as a documented backlash point |
| Episode 18: HAYASii’s “Hunting Soul” | Musical resemblance, attribution, and rights | YOSHIKI raised concerns about resemblance to X Japan; the production committee apologized and said it was discussing rights |
1. Episode 1: Momo’s alien abduction
The series opens with Momo being abducted by aliens. ComicBook.com’s account describes her stripped to her underwear and restrained in a medical chair while the aliens threaten to take her reproductive organs. The scene establishes genuine peril, but its sexualized framing of a teenage character is also why some viewers objected to it as sexual-assault material rather than ordinary monster peril. The criticism is about how the threat is presented, not a claim that every viewer reacted the same way.

2. Episode 9: the “Empty Space” return
In episode 9, Momo and Aira remove their clothes down to their underwear to move through a watery dimension. After the fight, Momo and Okarun return nude, piled atop one another in front of classmates. ComicBook.com reports that the scene adapts chapter 25 of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga. Reactions described in the coverage split: some praised its fidelity to the source and the awkwardness of teenage sexuality; others found the depiction uncomfortable because the characters are teenagers.
This debate differs from episode 1’s explicit threat: it concerns nudity, the comedic or awkward framing of teenagers, and whether faithful adaptation is sufficient justification for keeping the scene. ComicBook.com’s episode 9 report and detikPop’s coverage describe the setup and divided response.

3. Episode 12: the hot-spring cliffhanger
The first season ends with Momo endangered during a hot-spring encounter, before the immediate peril is resolved. Critical responses summarized in episode coverage describe the sexual-assault threat and cliffhanger as distressing or exploitative. Other critics interpret Dandadan’s uncomfortable sexual situations as part of its coming-of-age storytelling. The ending makes the dispute sharper: viewers are left with the threat unresolved at the season break.

4. The recurring criticism: sexual threat as a plot device
Some criticism is aimed not at one scene but at a repeated storytelling choice: using sexual threat or assault peril to create danger or move the plot. That is a different question from whether a single scene is faithful to the manga or emotionally effective. Counterarguments treat uncomfortable experiences as part of the series’ coming-of-age approach. The disagreement should not be reduced to a consensus verdict; the available coverage does not establish how widely either view is held.
The episode reference page’s summary of the broader plot-device argument points to reviews discussing this recurring criticism.

5. Acrobatic Silky’s memories: devastating, but not a documented backlash moment
Acrobatic Silky’s past and attachment to Aira give her episode a traumatic emotional center. The anime devotes more attention to her memories than the manga does, and coverage describes those memories as a highlight that received critical acclaim. That makes the sequence a natural inclusion in a list of the show’s hardest scenes, but the available reporting does not establish it as a major controversy. Emotional weight and documented backlash are not the same thing.

6. Episode 18: HAYASii and “Hunting Soul”
The episode 18 dispute is separate from the debates over sexual content. X Japan member YOSHIKI raised concerns that fictional band HAYASii and its performance of “Hunting Soul” resembled X Japan. ComicBook.com reported that the production committee apologized for not explaining the inspiration to YOSHIKI and X Japan in advance, and said it was discussing rights with the parties.
The committee’s statement, as reproduced by ComicBook.com, said: “We deeply apologize for causing concern regarding the song ‘Hunting Soul’ from DAN DA DAN anime series,” YOSHIKI responded, also as reproduced in the report: “I appreciate the sincere response from the Dandadan production committee,” The issue here is likeness, attribution, and rights—not the content controversies raised by other episodes. ComicBook.com’s report by Nick Valdez, published August 25, 2025.
7–8. Why two more “controversies” are not listed as established fact
The available coverage does not reliably substantiate two additional scenes as major controversies. Adding them as though they had comparable, documented backlash would make the list sound more definitive than the evidence allows. Episode 9 and episode 12 provide reported disputes; Acrobatic Silky provides an emotionally intense, acclaimed counterexample. The number eight in the headline is therefore an editorial frame, not a measured ranking or a claim of eight equally contested moments.
Quick Recap
How to read the disagreement
- Separate kinds of dispute: sexual threat, nudity, traumatic backstory, and music likeness are distinct issues.
- Distinguish evidence from intensity: a scene can be upsetting or acclaimed without being a documented controversy.
- Keep adaptation in view: episode 9’s specific comparison is to manga chapter 25; fidelity helps explain the scene but does not settle objections to its framing.
- Avoid treating online reactions as polling: phrases such as “Episode 1 DISGUSTED” and “get ready to defend Dandadan with your life” come from individual online posts, not representative audience research. The reported examples and context.
