The evidence does not support a definitive list of eight people Michael Jordan is still close friends with and eight he no longer talks to. Public accounts do identify a few relationships, but they describe different kinds of connection and come from different years. Most notably, Charles Barkley said in 2026 that he and Jordan had spoken again after a long rift; Scottie Pippen, by contrast, said that he and Jordan were never great friends.
What is actually known about Michael Jordan’s friendships?
There is no reliable, current public record establishing eight close friends and eight people Jordan no longer speaks to. That distinction matters: being former teammates or business associates does not prove a personal friendship, and a reported falling-out does not establish permanent no-contact status.
The examples below are best understood as statements attributed to the people involved, anchored to the dates of the reports—not as a comprehensive account of Jordan’s private relationships.
People publicly described as friends
Kobe Bryant
At Kobe Bryant’s memorial in 2020, Jordan spoke of him as a close friend and “like a little brother.” Jordan said, “Maybe it surprised people that Kobe and I were very close friends. But we were very close friends. Kobe was my dear friend. He was like a little brother,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times. This is a clear public expression of affection, but Bryant died in 2020, so it is not evidence of a living friendship today.

Charles Oakley
A 2022 Fox Sports report described Oakley as still close friends with Jordan. That is a dated account, not independent confirmation of their status in 2026. The same report quoted Oakley saying the Jordan-Pippen relationship was over; that is Oakley’s characterization, not proof that the former teammates never had a personal bond or that their status has remained unchanged.
Former friends and strained relationships
Charles Barkley: a rift followed by renewed contact
In a 2023 60 Minutes interview, Barkley said that he and Jordan had stopped speaking after Barkley criticized Jordan’s management of the Charlotte team. Barkley said he believed Jordan did not have enough people around him willing to say no, and added that Jordan “got really offended, and we haven’t spoken,” according to CBS News.

That account was updated in 2026. Barkley said mutual friend Vince Coleman got the two men on the phone; they spoke and discussed getting together to play golf, as reported by Sporting News. The report supports renewed contact and a discussion of meeting, not confirmation that the golf outing happened or that their former closeness has been fully restored.
Scottie Pippen: a championship partnership, not necessarily friendship
In an interview excerpt reported by Sporting News on August 10, 2026, Pippen described Jordan as a “Great teammate, but we were just never great friends.” The report also said they had not spoken since 2020. Those are Pippen’s retrospective account and the report’s description of their contact; they should not be turned into a claim about every stage of their relationship or treated as proof that a professional partnership was also a close personal friendship.

Why a fixed list of 16 is misleading
- The count is unsupported: the available accounts do not substantiate eight current close friends or eight people Jordan no longer talks to.
- The dates change the picture: Barkley’s 2023 description of silence was followed by his 2026 account of speaking with Jordan again.
- Different relationships are being conflated: a teammate, a friend, and someone with whom a person has lost contact are not interchangeable categories.
- Statements have limits: Jordan’s tribute to Bryant establishes affection, while Barkley’s and Pippen’s comments describe their own perspectives at particular points in time.
Accordingly, names that appear in unverified or inaccessible accounts should not be added simply to fill out the headline’s numbers. For example, a surfaced reference to childhood friends David Bridges and Adolph Shiver could not be confirmed from an accessible report and is not a sound basis for listing them as current close friends.
