Netflix’s 2024 TV-14 documentary Untold: The Murder of Air McNair is both a portrait of Steve “Air” McNair’s football career and a look at the investigation into his death. These five takeaways explain how the film joins those stories—and where its account should be read with care.
1. The film pairs McNair’s football story with the investigation
Netflix describes the documentary as following pivotal moments in the investigation while charting McNair’s rise through 13 NFL seasons and the Tennessee Titans’ run to the 2000 Super Bowl. Its official synopsis also points to game-day footage and interviews with teammates, coaches, and friends. That framing matters: the film is not presented only as a murder mystery, but as a story about a player and the life surrounding his career.
2. McNair’s legacy is grounded in a specific NFL career
TIME reports that McNair played for the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans, and Baltimore Ravens from 1995 to 2007, and won the NFL MVP award in 2003. Netflix likewise identifies him as a former NFL MVP and says the documentary covers his 13 seasons in the league. The career context gives the film’s account of his death a broader frame than the crime alone.
3. The deaths occurred in Nashville on July 4, 2009
Netflix says McNair and 20-year-old Sahel “Jenny” Kazemi were found dead from multiple gunshot wounds at a downtown Nashville apartment on July 4, 2009. TIME reports that police ruled the deaths a murder-suicide by Kazemi. That disposition is the police ruling as reported by TIME; it is not a detail stated in Netflix’s synopsis.

4. The filmmakers had access to extensive case materials
TIME reports that directors Rodney Lucas and Taylor Alexander Ward received the complete case files from lead detective Charles Robinson and had access to more than 100 crime-scene photos. This describes the materials available to the filmmakers. Access to case records can add detail to a documentary, but it does not by itself establish every interpretation or disputed assertion presented in it.
5. The directors wanted McNair remembered beyond his death
Lucas told TIME, “As brilliant as Steve was, when he was killed, he became just another black man who was shot dead,” adding, “This doc humanizes Steve.” Ward said, “Our goal is to just tell the complete story as honestly and objectively as possible,” and that “this brief moment shouldn’t define or overshadow all the other things that came before.” Their stated aim is to keep the circumstances of McNair’s death from eclipsing the rest of his life and career.

What the documentary is about
In Netflix’s account, the film brings together McNair’s rise in the NFL, the Titans’ Super Bowl-era story, and the investigation following the deaths of McNair and Kazemi. TIME notes that there may never be one definitive answer to why Kazemi killed McNair, since she is dead. That is TIME’s framing of an unresolved question, not a conclusion supplied by Netflix’s official synopsis.
