A seven-Oscar night for Oppenheimer
The Academy held the 96th Oscars at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on March 10, 2024, honoring films released in 2023. Oppenheimer won Best Picture, and Christopher Nolan won for directing. Its other five victories were for Cillian Murphy in leading actor, Robert Downey Jr. in supporting actor, cinematography, film editing, and original score. The result capped a strong awards-season run without turning into a complete sweep. The film entered the ceremony with 13 nominations and finished with seven wins. Comcast reported on March 11, 2024, that it had grossed over $950 million worldwide and was then the highest-grossing biopic; that is a dated figure, not a current box-office total. “Upsets” is best understood as a description of the evening’s competitive texture, not a claim that every result was shocking. TIME’s contemporaneous recap noted that Oppenheimer had an outside chance of tying the single-film record of 11 wins, but it lost supporting actress and adapted screenplay early on the way to seven.

Two early losses for the favorite
Da’Vine Joy Randolph won supporting actress for The Holdovers, while American Fiction took adapted screenplay. Those results punctured the possibility of an unbroken Oppenheimer march through the categories, even as the film went on to dominate the evening overall. (TIME’s recap)
Emma Stone prevailed in the leading-actress race
Emma Stone won leading actress for Poor Things, a closely watched contest in which she beat Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon. It was a major win for Stone and one of four Oscars for Poor Things, which also won production design, costume design, and makeup and hairstyling. The winners spread across different kinds of films
The awards also recognized work beyond the two films that most defined the night. The Zone of Interest won sound and international feature film, while Godzilla Minus One won visual effects. The screenplay prize for American Fiction and Randolph’s supporting-actress award gave The Holdovers a prominent win. Ryan Gosling brought “I’m Just Ken” to the stage
Gosling’s performance was the evening’s most unabashedly theatrical interlude: a sprawling song-and-dance rendition of “I’m Just Ken,” joined by fellow Kens and featuring Slash on guitar. AP described the number as a sprawling performance; TIME called it a high-energy Kenergy moment. Those descriptions capture its scale and spirit, not measured audience-response data.

The spectacle and the award result were different stories. “I’m Just Ken,” written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, was nominated for Original Song, but the Academy gave the award to “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. Gosling was also nominated for supporting actor for Barbie; the winner was Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer. (Academy ceremony record)
The speeches gave the blockbuster night some weight
Accepting Best Picture, Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas described the win as the realization of a long-held ambition: “I think any of us who make movies know that you kind of dream of this moment. Murphy, accepting leading actor, placed the film’s subject in a wider frame: “For better or worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world.” AP reported that he then dedicated the award to peacemakers. The ceremony unfolded amid wars in Gaza and Ukraine, a context that lent his words a gravity distinct from the night’s celebration of the film’s craft and popularity. (Associated Press)

The ceremony’s shape was unusually easy to read: Oppenheimer was the dominant winner, but not an unstoppable one; Stone’s victory and the supporting-actress and screenplay results supplied meaningful competition; and Gosling delivered a performance that could command attention without winning its category. The night’s clearest contrast was between the award for “What Was I Made For?” and the arena-sized exuberance of “I’m Just Ken”—a reminder that an Oscars moment can outshine its result without changing it.
