He wanted the ceremony to be an escape for viewers, he told Entertainment Weekly in a press-preview interview reported by TV Insider. The comments came days after Charlie Kirk was killed, but Bargatze said the Emmy writers had not planned political jokes in the first place.
What did Nate Bargatze say about political jokes?
Asked how political the ceremony would get, Bargatze answered, “Not. Not at all.” He said, “I know there’s heartbreaking stuff that’s been happening right now, but I want this night to be an escape, and I think that’s why I was brought on.” He added that people watched his stand-up for that reason and that he did not want to break their trust. TV Insider’s September 14, 2025 report reproduced his remarks from the press preview.
Was this a sudden change after Charlie Kirk’s killing?
Not according to the interview report. TV Insider quoted Bargatze saying the writers “were never really going to do anything [political] to begin with.” His answer described his intended approach to hosting and the writers’ existing plan; it does not establish that the killing prompted a reversal or a new formal ban. The report situated the interview in the days after Kirk was killed at an event at Utah Valley University, but Bargatze’s stated reason for keeping his own material light was to make the night an escape for viewers.
Did the entire 2025 Emmys telecast avoid politics?
Bargatze’s comments were about his hosting material, not a guarantee about every part of the broadcast. Presenters, winners and other segments were not all covered by his statement. The Associated Press’ recap of the completed show describes an opening sketch about television and a running donation gag tied to the length of acceptance speeches; that account does not establish that every moment of the telecast was apolitical. The AP recap is useful for the broadcast’s format, but the host’s pre-show intention should not be treated as a blanket description of the full ceremony.
