Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan share the Match of the Day presenting duties. The BBC announced the trio in January 2025, with the change taking effect from the 2025–26 season. There is no longer an open vacancy—and the available BBC reporting does not establish a factual shortlist of ten other candidates.
Who replaced Gary Lineker on Match of the Day?
The BBC named Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan as the new presenters on 15 January 2025. It said this would be the first time three people shared the role. Gary Lineker, who had presented the programme since 1999, was due to continue for the rest of that season, according to the announcement. BBC Sport’s announcement set out the change.
The trio’s duties were to cover Saturday’s Match of the Day, Sunday’s Match of the Day 2 and Wednesday’s Match of the Day: Champions League. In its 16 August 2025 season explainer, BBC Sport confirmed that Cates, Chapman and Logan were presenting and rotating across programmes; Chapman hosted the first show of the season. The BBC’s explainer on how the new arrangement works describes that rotation.
Why the job is shared by three presenters
The BBC chose a presenting team rather than one successor. The three bring different kinds of relevant experience: Cates has worked across football broadcasting, Chapman had already presented Match of the Day 2, and Logan has hosted major sporting events for the BBC. Their backgrounds help explain the fit without implying that any one of them was the sole intended replacement.

Kelly Cates
BBC Sport described Cates as having a 27-year football broadcasting career, including work for major broadcasters and BBC Radio 5 Live. She had presented Premier League football for Sky Sports since 2017 and was set to continue that work alongside her BBC duties. BBC Sport’s profiles of the new hosts gives those career details.
Mark Chapman
Chapman had hosted Match of the Day 2 since 2013, giving him direct experience with the programme’s format and audience. He also presented BBC Radio 5 Live programmes including The Monday Night Club and 606. His existing role on the franchise made him the trio’s most directly established Match of the Day presenter before the change.

Gabby Logan
Logan joined the BBC in 2007 and presented major events including World Cups, European Championships, the Six Nations and the Olympics. She also co-hosted BBC Sports Personality of the Year from 2013. Her documented experience is broad live-sport and event presenting, rather than a prior regular role on Match of the Day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no reliable list of ten contenders
The question “Who could replace Gary Lineker?” was a natural one before the BBC made its announcement. But BBC reporting establishes the outcome and the selected trio’s credentials; it does not identify ten people considered for the role, or confirm that any other named presenter was formally in contention. A ten-name list presented as a factual shortlist would therefore overstate what is known.

The scale of the programme helps explain the interest, but it does not reveal the selection process. BBC Sport’s January 2025 announcement said 33 million viewers tuned in across all Match of the Day Premier League and FA Cup programmes in the preceding season. That figure is the BBC’s stated total for that scope; the report does not detail its methodology.
