Who are the 10 richest authors in the world?
The following is Books of Brilliance’s ranking, updated in September 2026. It presents Rowling’s estimate in pounds and the other figures in U.S. dollars. The order is the publisher’s, not a new ranking calculated from the ranges.
| Rank | Author | Estimated wealth reported | Best known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | J.K. Rowling | About £975 million | Harry Potter |
| 2 | James Patterson | Roughly $700–800 million | Alex Cross and a large co-authored catalog |
| 3 | Danielle Steel | Roughly $400–600 million | More than 100 bestselling novels |
| 4 | Stephen King | Roughly $400–500 million | It, The Shining and decades of adaptations |
| 5 | Paulo Coelho | Broadly estimated at $300–500 million | The Alchemist |
| 6 | Nora Roberts | Roughly $350–400 million | Romance, suspense and the J.D. Robb books |
| 7 | John Grisham | Roughly $350–400 million | The Firm and legal thrillers |
| 8 | Jeffrey Archer | Roughly $150–200 million | Kane and Abel |
| 9 | Dan Brown | Roughly $150–200 million | The Da Vinci Code |
| 10 | R.L. Stine | Roughly $150–200 million | Goosebumps |
All figures and descriptions in the table are reported by Books of Brilliance. The publisher says its list focuses on people whose author careers are central to their wealth, rather than fortunes predominantly built through unrelated businesses.
Why estimates of authors’ wealth differ
Authors’ finances are largely private, and the ranking’s figures are not audited financial statements. Books of Brilliance notes that private assets, taxes, charitable giving, advances and rights deals make exact net worth difficult to establish from public information. Most U.S. authors also lack an equivalent public estimate.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The ranges overlap, and publishers may count different assets or convert currencies differently. For example, the ranking puts Coelho’s broad $300–500 million estimate above Roberts’s $350–400 million range even though the ranges overlap. The list should therefore be read as one publisher’s estimate-based snapshot, not a definitive ordering of ten fortunes.
Why Rowling tops this particular list
Books of Brilliance reports that the 2026 Sunday Times Rich List estimated Rowling’s wealth at about £975 million. That is a secondary report of the Rich List figure. Separately, Forbes’s real-time profile displayed $1.2 billion as of September 15, 2026. These estimates differ in publisher, currency and potentially methodology, so neither should be treated as an exact, settled net-worth figure.

The same profile says she has donated more than $200 million to charity over the past 20 years. Both figures are Forbes’s reporting; the donation amount is tied to the time period stated in its profile.
