Goldberg’s 84-second demolition of Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series 2016 is one of the clearest modern examples of a shocking squash: a dominant star was beaten before he could mount meaningful resistance. But several famous wrestling shocks—including Hulk Hogan’s wins over Andre the Giant and Ultimate Warrior—were not squashes. This guide separates the genuine one-sided match from the dramatic, competitive upset, rather than stretching the definition to fill a top ten.
What makes a wrestling match a squash?
A squash is a markedly one-sided match in which one wrestler overwhelms an opponent who has little meaningful chance to build sustained offense. A quick finish can help make a match feel like a squash, but time alone is not enough: the balance of the action matters. A short match in which both wrestlers trade offense may be decisive without being a squash.
“Shocking” is a matter of context. A squash can surprise viewers when the loser is a celebrated champion, a seemingly unstoppable star, or someone expected to dominate the matchup. The strongest documented example in this set is Goldberg versus Brock Lesnar. Other landmark results are worth discussing as contrasts, but they should not be mislabeled as squashes.
Goldberg squashes Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series 2016
Goldberg’s return match against Lesnar at Survivor Series on November 20, 2016, is the standout shock because the result and the match’s one-sided shape collided so sharply with Lesnar’s dominant presentation. WWE records the match at 1 minute, 24 seconds: Goldberg hit two Spears and a Jackhammer, then pinned Lesnar. WWE’s event report supplies the time and finish.

The context magnified the surprise. WWE said Goldberg returned after a 12-year absence from competition, while ESPN’s contemporary year-end account described the result as essentially a squash and noted how nearly unstoppable Lesnar had been made to seem. WWE’s return announcement provides the hiatus context; ESPN’s 2016 review captures the contrast in Lesnar’s booking.
It was not merely a surprising winner. Goldberg’s brief burst of offense left no long competitive struggle to soften the reversal: the match ended almost as soon as it began, and a star presented as a near-unstoppable force had been dispatched decisively.

Ultimate Warrior ends Honky Tonk Man’s title reign at SummerSlam 1988
At SummerSlam 1988, Ultimate Warrior defeated Intercontinental Champion Honky Tonk Man and ended his 15-month reign, according to WWE’s SummerSlam history timeline. The shock rests on the sudden change in status: a long-reigning champion lost the title to Warrior, whose victory became a defining milestone.
The documented evidence establishes the title change and reign length, not an exact match duration. The result belongs in a discussion of shocking decisive wins, but without a sourced account of the action and timing it is safer not to call it a squash outright.

Famous shocks that were not squashes
Some wrestling results are so consequential that they often appear in the same conversation as squash matches. Their importance does not make them squashes. These examples are useful because they show why the label should describe the match itself, not just the surprise of its ending.
Hulk Hogan pins Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III
At WrestleMania III in 1987, Hogan ended Andre the Giant’s WWE streak, which WWE describes as lasting nearly 15 years, with the famous body slam and pinfall. WWE’s event history calls it Andre’s first pinfall loss in WWE. WWE’s WrestleMania III retrospective documents the streak and result; its event timeline identifies the pinfall loss.

This was a landmark, decisive result—not evidence of a quick squash. The historical significance comes from the end of Andre’s remarkable run and the scale of the moment, not from a brief one-sided match. WWE’s timeline also gives an announced attendance of 93,173; that is WWE’s announced figure, not an independently verified count.
Ultimate Warrior defeats Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI
Warrior beat Hogan for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania VI in 1990. WWE calls it Hogan’s first pinfall loss to Warrior and describes it as Warrior’s biggest victory; its retrospective recalls that fans saw Hogan as having been replaced as the company’s leading star. WWE characterizes the match as an epic encounter, not a squash. The result shocked because of the championship stakes and Hogan’s place in the company, while the contest itself was competitive. WWE’s profile lists attendance at 67,000; the page does not specify a publication year for that figure.
Eddie Guerrero wins the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar
Guerrero’s title win over Lesnar at No Way Out in 2004 was another major upset, but not a squash. WWE’s championship retrospective says Lesnar dominated much of the match; Goldberg interfered, disrupting the finish and allowing Guerrero to capitalize for the title. WWE’s WWE Championship history recounts the result and finish.
The match is a useful contrast: a shocking champion change can come from a competitive story and a disrupted finish, rather than one wrestler simply overwhelming the other.

- Look at the match, not just the result. A squash involves overwhelming dominance and little meaningful resistance; a surprise pinfall by itself does not establish one.
- Consider the loser’s standing beforehand. A title reign, streak, or reputation for dominance can make a lopsided loss land harder.
- Separate the facts from the judgment. Match time, finish, and championship changes can be documented; ranking a result as “most shocking” remains subjective.
- Keep historic upsets in their own category. Hogan–Andre and Hogan–Warrior were major decisive moments, but WWE’s descriptions do not support calling them squashes.
On the evidence available here, Goldberg–Lesnar is the clearest answer to the question of a truly shocking squash, while Warrior ending Honky Tonk Man’s reign is a compelling sudden title-change example. The other famous matches belong in the wider history of wrestling shocks, not in a strict squash ranking.
