From Roman Reigns’ return to Dominik Mysterio’s betrayal of Rhea Ripley, WWE’s 2024 Premium Live Events delivered turns that reshaped alliances and championship stories. This ranking weighs three things: how surprising a moment was in the story immediately beforehand, how much it changed what came next, and how clearly it makes sense without a week-by-week recap. The order is editorial judgment, not an official WWE ranking or an objective measure of shock.
What were the most shocking WWE PLE moments of 2024?
-
Roman Reigns returns at SummerSlam
During Cody Rhodes’s Bloodline Rules defense of the Undisputed WWE Championship against Solo Sikoa, Reigns appeared for the first time since WrestleMania XL. As Sikoa looked poised to take control, Reigns struck him with a Superman Punch and Spear. Rhodes retained the title, and Reigns left after subtly acknowledging him. The return instantly complicated the Bloodline story: Reigns had reappeared, but did not simply reunite with Rhodes or settle the group’s power struggle. WWE’s SummerSlam recap records the match and return.
-
Dominik Mysterio betrays Rhea Ripley at SummerSlam
Ripley challenged Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship, but the match became a betrayal story. Mysterio took a chair from Ripley and distracted the referee; after Morgan retained, he kissed Morgan and left with the champion. The action was easy to understand even without the preceding weeks of tension: Ripley’s ally had chosen her rival at the decisive moment. The turn also gave Morgan’s title win a personal consequence beyond the result. WWE’s recap describes the sequence.
-
The Rock confronts the Bad Blood victors
At Bad Blood, Jimmy Uso helped Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes defeat Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu. After the victory, The Rock confronted the trio. Jimmy’s return altered the balance in the Bloodline conflict; The Rock’s appearance then made clear that the night’s closing image was a new threat, not a tidy resolution. The confrontation landed even for viewers who knew only the main-event result. WWE’s Bad Blood event summary records the victory and post-match confrontation.

Jade Cargill debuts and eliminates Nia Jax at the Royal Rumble
Cargill made her WWE debut in the 2024 women’s Royal Rumble at No. 28. Her arrival was already a major surprise; she then hoisted Nia Jax overhead and eliminated her. That combination made the moment work on two levels: a new performer entered the company’s biggest annual battle royal, and her first impression was a direct demonstration of strength against a formidable opponent. WWE’s Royal Rumble recap confirms her entry and elimination.
-
Jey and Jimmy Uso draw Nos. 1 and 2 in the men’s Royal Rumble
Jey Uso entered the men’s Royal Rumble first and Jimmy Uso second, putting the brothers together at the very start. The placement carried history: Jimmy had betrayed Jey at the previous year’s SummerSlam. Their shared ring therefore came with an unresolved family conflict before the match had even filled out. The premise required little explanation, and WWE explicitly connected their Rumble meeting to that betrayal. WWE’s recap documents the entries and their significance.

Naomi returns at No. 2 in the women’s Royal Rumble
Naomi made a surprise return as the second entrant in the women’s Rumble. Because she arrived so early, the return was not just a brief cameo: it placed her in the match’s unfolding field from the outset. Jordynne Grace appeared shortly afterward, making the early portion of the match a sequence of notable arrivals. Naomi’s comeback is the clearest standalone surprise; the follow-up made the match feel even less predictable. WWE’s recap describes Naomi’s return and Grace’s appearance.

Kevin Owens is disqualified, then powerbombs Logan Paul through the announce table
In their United States Championship match at the Royal Rumble, referee Charles Robinson caught Owens using brass knuckles as he was about to pin Logan Paul. The referee disqualified Owens, ending his title challenge; Owens then attacked Paul and powerbombed him through the announce table. The sequence turned a rule-breaking attempt into a post-match assault, leaving the match result clear while ensuring the rivalry did not feel finished. WWE’s event recap recounts the disqualification and attack.

Bayley wins the women’s Royal Rumble from No. 3
Bayley entered third and won the 2024 women’s Royal Rumble, outlasting 29 other competitors. WWE lists her time in the match as 1:03:03 and says it set a new record for that match. Her victory was consequential as well as impressive: the winner earned the opportunity to pursue a championship at WrestleMania. It ranks below the sharpest betrayals and returns because the match’s outcome was a competitive result rather than a sudden change in allegiance, but the early entry and record-setting run made it one of the year’s defining PLE finishes. WWE’s recap gives the entry, win, and duration.
-
Rhea Ripley resets her shoulder at ringside
During her SummerSlam match with Morgan, Ripley’s shoulder appeared to pop out. WWE’s match presentation showed Ripley throwing herself into the announce table to put it back into place before continuing. The visual was startling because it interrupted the flow of a title match with an apparent physical crisis. This describes the moment as WWE presented it; it is not a medical assessment of Ripley’s shoulder. WWE’s recap describes the spot.

Gunther defeats Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship
Gunther beat Damian Priest at SummerSlam to win the World Heavyweight Championship. It was a consequential change in the title picture, though less of a shock than a surprise return or betrayal: a championship match naturally points toward the possibility of a new champion. Its place here recognizes the outcome’s importance while distinguishing an unexpected story turn from a major competitive result. WWE’s SummerSlam event summary lists Gunther as the winner.
What happened at SummerSlam 2024?
SummerSlam supplied four of the ten moments on this list: Reigns returned during Rhodes’s title defense against Sikoa; Mysterio turned on Ripley and sided with Morgan; Ripley’s shoulder spot startled viewers during the title match; and Gunther defeated Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship. The night combined abrupt character turns and a major return with a championship change, which is why it dominates this ranking.

How should this ranking be read?
WWE’s event recaps establish what happened, but they do not publish a definitive ranking of the year’s most shocking PLE moments. The order here reflects the stated editorial criteria rather than a poll or an official WWE list. The selection is a sourced shortlist of moments from the Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, and Bad Blood recaps, not a claim to cover every 2024 PLE or every moment that could qualify.
