There is no reliable, shared measure of which battle shonen anime are “underrated.” Here, the word means a series that may come up less often than mainstream staples in a viewer’s recommendation circle, despite having a distinctive hook or strength. For viewers looking for a lesser-known battle anime with memorable powers, tactical fights, or a compelling world, these five are grounded starting points—not a ranking of the ten least popular shows.
How to read this list
Reader discussions often ask for a “lesser known battle anime/manga with great lore/world building,” but individual posts are anecdotal, not evidence of a series’ general popularity. The picks below focus on what each offers in its premise or adaptation, and flag where available facts do not establish how much of the story the anime covers.
Battle anime to try next
1. World Trigger — tactical team battles and an expanding conflict
World Trigger is the clearest fit if you want organized team conflict rather than a parade of one-on-one showdowns. Toei’s official series page introduces Yuma Kuga’s arrival and describes a reboot project covering the Border enlistment, Neighbor invasion, and B-rank war arcs. That named arc scope gives prospective viewers a concrete sense of the story’s early breadth; it is not a promise of a release date or a statement that the entire manga is adapted.
2. Undead Unluck — an unusual supernatural duo
Fuuko’s Unluck ability and Andy’s immortality make for an immediately distinctive pairing, with supernatural action and comedy built into the premise. VIZ classifies the series as Shonen Jump, action-adventure, comedy, and supernatural, and lists both anime releases and manga volumes on its Undead Unluck page. VIZ also says the manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2020; that date is a publication fact, not a measure of how widely the anime is known.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. D.Gray-man — darker exorcist action
For viewers who prefer a darker supernatural atmosphere, D.Gray-man is a legacy candidate centered on exorcist-story appeal. The official introduction to D.Gray-man HALLOW confirms that the anime adapts Katsura Hoshino’s manga. That establishes the relationship between the works, but not that the anime covers the complete manga.
4. Kekkaishi — an older-school supernatural option
Kekkaishi is worth investigating if you want an older supernatural battle series rather than a current-season discovery. VIZ’s copyright and property information confirms manga and animation properties for the title. The available official information here does not establish a plot description or how much of the manga the anime adapts, so treat it as a candidate to explore rather than a verified complete adaptation.

5. Magi — fantasy action with manga and anime properties
Magi is the fantasy-action option in this group. VIZ’s copyright and property information confirms manga and animation properties for the title. It does not establish where the anime’s adaptation ends or whether the show is currently available to watch in your country.
Which one should you start with?
- For tactical group conflict: Start with World Trigger, whose official series description names several early arcs.
- For an offbeat supernatural premise: Try Undead Unluck and its contrast between Fuuko’s Unluck and Andy’s immortality.
- For a darker tone: Investigate D.Gray-man, keeping in mind that HALLOW’s adaptation relationship does not mean it covers the full manga.
- For legacy discoveries: Kekkaishi and Magi are confirmed manga-and-animation properties, but the available information does not settle their adaptation endpoints.
Why this is five picks, not a forced top ten
The evidence supports these five candidates, but it does not establish a comparable popularity measure, a defensible ranking of ten, or verified adaptation coverage and current viewing access for every title. A longer list built by guessing would make “underrated” sound more objective than it is. Availability also varies by country, so check a territory-specific catalog before choosing where to watch.

A current contrast: Tougen Anki
Tougen Anki illustrates why “underrated” can be time-sensitive: its official site reports a first anime cour in 2025 and a second season beginning in October 2026. That makes it a current contrast, not a straightforward overlooked pick. Check the official site for its latest broadcast information.
