The nWo began in WCW in 1996 with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash as the Outsiders; Hulk Hogan’s alliance with them at Bash at the Beach turned the group into a defining wrestling storyline. This ranking focuses on major WCW-era nWo members and weighs storyline dominance, importance to the faction, and documented prominence. “Strength” means perceived power in wrestling storylines—not real-world fighting ability—and “popular” is qualitative: WWE calls the nWo a pop-culture phenomenon, but provides no member-by-member popularity poll. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking.
How to read this ranking
WWE’s histories establish the nWo’s members, titles, branches, and major storylines; they do not score wrestlers against a shared strength or popularity measure. The entries below therefore consider three things: how dominant each person was portrayed, how important they were to the faction’s story, and how prominently WWE’s retrospective histories feature them. Physical presentation is context, not proof of superiority. The scope is the major WCW-era incarnations, including the Wolfpac, rather than every later affiliate or appearance in another promotion.
The nWo’s power was a story construct: Hogan held the WCW World Title while Hall and Nash held the WCW Tag Team Titles, and the group attacked WCW stars and shaped major angles. That record supports a ranking of kayfabe dominance, not a claim about actual athletic ability. WWE’s accounts describe the faction’s shirts spreading through wrestling arenas and call it a pop-culture phenomenon, but do not establish which individual member was most popular.
10. Konnan
Wolfpac’s voice and recruiter
Konnan joined Nash and Randy Savage in the Wolfpac, the nWo’s red-and-black branch. That gives him a meaningful place in one of the faction’s most recognizable later formations, though WWE’s retrospective history places him in a supporting role rather than among the original leaders or titleholders. His standing here reflects faction importance more than a documented record of individual dominance.

9. Buff Bagwell
A prominent addition to the expanding faction
Bagwell appears among the members WWE names as the group grew beyond its original core. His inclusion reflects the nWo’s expanding WCW roster presence, but the cited histories do not assign him the same central leadership, championship position, or major turning-point role as the higher-ranked wrestlers. The evidence supports recognition as a notable member, not a claim that he was one of its strongest leaders.
8. Scott Norton
Physical intimidation within the nWo ranks
WWE identifies Norton as one of the later members and describes him as physically imposing. That presentation made him a credible source of threat in the faction’s larger-than-life world. Size alone does not settle a strength ranking, however, and the official histories reviewed give him less central story and leadership weight than the names above him.

7. Syxx (Sean Waltman)
An early member with lasting recognition
Waltman joined shortly after the founding as Syxx, making him an important early addition rather than a late roster name. WWE’s Hall of Fame account identifies Hogan, Hall, Nash, and Waltman as the members of the group inducted in the 2020 class. That recognition and his early place in the faction lift him above later additions, though the histories do not give him the title-centered dominance or leadership of the top tier.
6. Randy Savage
A major star in the faction’s later story
Savage’s addition brought an established main-event presence into the nWo story. WWE’s history names him among the notable recruits and later places him in the Wolfpac alongside Nash and Konnan. Those roles make him more consequential than a roster addition whose importance is mainly membership; the retrospective account, however, does not position him as the central architect or dominant champion of the group.

5. The Giant (Big Show)
A formidable presence recruited from WCW
WWE’s history records the recruitment of The Giant, later widely known as Big Show. In the faction’s storyline, bringing a major WCW figure into the nWo strengthened its portrayal as a force capable of taking top rivals off the board. His imposing presentation supports a high kayfabe-threat ranking, but the source material does not provide a comparative physical-strength measurement or place him above the faction’s core leaders.
4. Scott Steiner
A high-profile later-era enforcer
Steiner joined as the nWo expanded, and his addition gave the later WCW faction another established, intimidating presence. His prominence among the named additions makes him a stronger candidate for this list than members with only brief or less-developed roles in the official retrospectives. The available WWE histories do not assign him the founding influence or defining championship storyline of the top three, so his placement reflects later-era threat and recognition rather than origin-story importance.

3. Scott Hall
The Outsider who helped launch the story
Hall arrived in WCW with Nash in 1996 as one of the Outsiders, helping create the uncertainty that made the nWo’s arrival feel like an invasion. He later held the WCW Tag Team Titles with Nash while Hogan held the world championship, tying Hall directly to the faction’s early display of power. WWE’s history also recounts Hall’s role in helping Nash end Goldberg’s undefeated run in the storyline. Hall ranks below the two leaders here because the retrospective accounts frame Hogan as the pivotal addition and Nash as a central force across the group’s later branches.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.2. Kevin Nash
A dominant force from the Outsiders to the Wolfpac
Nash was one of the two Outsiders whose arrival began the nWo story, and he remained central as the faction changed shape. He held the tag titles with Hall, led the red-and-black Wolfpac, and was at the center of the Fingerpoke of Doom storyline. WWE’s biography calls Nash a six-time World Champion and describes the Outsiders flattening smaller opponents, with the tag championship serving as an nWo trophy. Those are WWE’s retrospective characterizations of his career and presentation, not an objective measurement of strength. His sustained leadership and portrayal as a dominant big man place him near the top.

1. Hulk Hogan
The turn that transformed the nWo
Hogan’s alliance with Hall and Nash at Bash at the Beach in 1996 changed the group’s trajectory: the established WCW hero became its most consequential leader and held the WCW World Title as the nWo’s central power figure. WWE’s Hall of Fame account recounts the audience’s hostile reaction to his turn and describes the group’s rise to prominence. Hogan ranks first because his star status and role in the defining betrayal gave the nWo its most influential leader and its clearest source of storyline authority. This is a judgment about kayfabe power and historical prominence, not a claim that he was physically stronger than every member.
Why the list is selective
The nWo grew far beyond the original trio. WWE’s histories also name Ted DiBiase, Curt Hennig, Brian Adams, Dusty Rhodes, Dennis Rodman, Lex Luger, Sting, and later WWE-era members including Shawn Michaels and Booker T. The faction’s changing lineups—and its Wolfpac branch—make any ten-person ranking selective. WWE inducted the nWo into its 2020 Hall of Fame class, identifying Hogan, Hall, Nash, and Waltman as the group’s inducted members. The retrospective recognition underscores the faction’s broader influence, but does not turn this member-by-member order into an official ranking.
