Yes—several films now treated as major works of American cinema were originally given an X rating by the US Motion Picture Association (MPA, then the MPAA). That rating restricted admission by age; it did not, by itself, mean a film was pornography. Midnight Cowboy, the only X-rated film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, is the best-known example.
Here, “X-rated” means a US MPAA rating. The British Board of Film Classification also used an X certificate, but that was a separate national classification. “Mainstream” is an editorial description, not an MPAA category: these are films made for theatrical audiences or significant in critical and cultural conversation.
Ten mainstream films originally rated X in the United States
The titles below are ordered for recognition, not ranked by importance. The original X rating did not mean the same thing for every film: contemporaneous coverage cited different content, and the available documentation is stronger for some titles than others.

Midnight Cowboy (1969)
The MPAA gave John Schlesinger’s drama an X rating because a theater scene implied a homosexual act, according to the Los Angeles Times’ history of the ratings debate. Its subsequent success makes it the clearest example of an X-rated film entering the mainstream: it became the only X-rated movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The American Civil Liberties Union’s censorship timeline says it won three Academy Awards.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Stanley Kubrick’s film received a US X rating for scenes of sadistic violence, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was also among the respected and Oscar-nominated films later invoked in the MPA’s account of the X category. The British classification history is distinct: a UK certificate should not be described as an MPAA rating.

Last Tango in Paris (1972)
The US X rating was attributed to graphic sexual content and dialogue in the Los Angeles Times. The film also had a separate British history: the BBFC records an uncut X certificate in 1978. That British certificate was not the US MPAA rating.

Medium Cool (1969)
Haskell Wexler’s drama was originally rated X, with full-frontal nudity and violence cited in the film-reference summary at Filmsite’s history of 1960s film. A 1978 Washington Post retrospective also included it among serious films that had received X ratings.

Last Summer (1969)
This drama appears in broad reference lists of mainstream films originally released with an X rating. The available evidence here does not establish the specific scene behind that rating or a later editing or re-rating history, so those details should not be inferred from the label alone.

Greetings (1968)
Brian De Palma’s early feature is reported as having received an original MPAA X rating for nudity and profanity, later reduced to R, in Filmsite’s 1960s film history. It shows how the X category was used near the beginning of the ratings era.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970)
Russ Meyer’s film appears in reference summaries as initially X-rated and later reclassified NC-17. Criterion has issued DVD and Blu-ray editions, offering a physical-media option for viewers who collect the film; check the publisher’s catalog for current edition details.

What the MPAA’s X rating meant—and what it did not
The MPAA introduced its ratings system in 1968 with categories including G, M, R, and X. X signaled restricted admission; it was not a declaration that a film was pornographic. The ACLU’s timeline and the MPA’s MPAA Ratings 50 describe the category’s history and its association with films that entered serious cultural discussion.
A key reason the label became misleading was that the X was not trademarked by the MPAA. Adult-film distributors could use the symbol without receiving an MPAA rating, helping turn a classification into a public shorthand for pornography. That stigma affected the prospects of films carrying a legitimate X rating, even though the rating itself did not make that judgment.

In 1990 the MPAA replaced X with NC-17, a category intended to identify films for adults while separating the rating from the X symbol’s accumulated association with pornography. In the Los Angeles Times report announcing NC-17, MPAA president Jack Valenti said, “We are going back to the original intent of the rating system.” He added, “It takes us back to the days, hopefully, of ‘Midnight Cowboy,’ ‘Last Tango in Paris’ and ‘A Clockwork Orange.’”

The distinction is useful when reading older film histories: an X was a US age classification, not a universal rating or a stable description of a film’s content. The BBFC’s case studies for Last Tango in Paris and A Clockwork Orange document their separate British classification histories.
How to read claims about an “original X rating”
- Check the country. A US MPAA X and a British BBFC X certificate belong to different systems.
- Separate the rating from its rationale. Contemporary reporting identifies reasons for the ratings of Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, and Last Tango in Paris; the evidence for several other titles in this list is less specific.
- Do not assume a film was banned. An X restricted admission; it did not automatically prohibit theatrical release or establish that a movie was pornography.
- Distinguish the original rating from later history. Some reference summaries report later changes, but an X label alone does not show whether a specific title was edited, resubmitted, or re-rated.
