Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan have described their relationship as a close, trusting friendship formed while making the Fifty Shades films. Their interviews do not establish a real-life romance. Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey’s relationship is fictional, and comments made between 2015 and 2022 cannot confirm how close the actors are today.
What the record says about their relationship
The clearest evidence comes from the actors’ own comments about working together. They spoke of mutual trust, respect, and support; Johnson later described Dornan as being like a brother. Those remarks address their experience as co-stars, not a romantic relationship outside the films.
Ten sourced details that put the rumors in context
1. They played fictional romantic leads
Johnson and Dornan starred as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Their characters’ romance belongs to the story, not to evidence about the actors’ private lives. Glamour’s 2015 feature discusses the film and the actors’ collaboration.
2. Johnson appreciated being able to laugh with Dornan
In that January 2015 interview, Johnson said she appreciated being able to laugh with him. It is a small but revealing detail about the atmosphere they described during the film’s press cycle.

6. Her “we hate each other” line was sarcasm
Asked about the contradictory gossip, Johnson joked: “We hate each other and we’re having an affair, so everybody’s right. How about that?” Read in context, the line mocks the incompatible rumors; it is not a confession.

7. Johnson later said they had always got along

8. She compared him to a brother
Johnson also called Dornan “like a brother to me.” That is her description of their bond, not a claim that they are related or a statement about a current private relationship.

10. A chemistry debate was about the film
A March 2015 Vanity Fair report covered criticism of the pair’s on-screen chemistry and quoted Dornan arguing that they would not have been cast if there were a chemistry problem. That is an argument about casting and screen performance, not evidence of an off-screen romance.

What the interviews can—and cannot—establish
The dated remarks support a warm, trusting working friendship and contradict the idea that Johnson said they never got along. They do not prove an affair, and they do not establish the actors’ present-day relationship. The most direct public descriptions in this material are from 2015, 2017, and 2022.
A dated detail about Dornan’s family
In January 2018, TIME reported that Dornan had said his wife, Amelia Warner, had not seen the Fifty Shades films at that point. This is a report about what was said then, not evidence about what Warner has watched since or about the couple’s current circumstances.
