Aimee Lou Wood called Saturday Night Live’s “The White Potus” sketch “mean and unfunny” after it caricatured her The White Lotus character Chelsea in a joke about fluoride. Wood said she objected to the sketch’s concept and the way it singled out Chelsea—not to performer Sarah Sherman, who played the character. She later said she had received apologies from SNL.
What happened in the “The White Potus” sketch?
The pre-taped sketch aired on Saturday Night Live on April 12, 2025. It borrowed the resort setting and characters of The White Lotus season three for a political parody about Donald Trump and people in his circle. Jon Hamm appeared as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the style of Walton Goggins’s Rick. Sarah Sherman played Chelsea, Wood’s fictional character, with exaggerated false teeth and an imitation of aspects of Wood’s voice and expressions.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, a line about removing fluoride from drinking water leads into Sherman’s Chelsea asking, “Fluoride, what is that?”
Why did Aimee Lou Wood call it “mean and unfunny”?
Wood responded in Instagram Stories on April 13. The Guardian quoted her saying, “Whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny.” She said she had enjoyed watching the show and understood that parody takes the piss, but believed there was “a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way,” according to The Guardian’s April 14 account.

Her explanation focused on the fluoride joke and what she saw as an uneven distribution of the joke’s targets. The Los Angeles Times reported Wood saying, “I am not thin-skinned,” and that she enjoys being mocked when it is clever and in good spirits. She added: “But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth. I don’t mind caricature — I understand that’s what ‘SNL’ is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on.”
Was Wood criticizing Sarah Sherman?
No. Sherman played Chelsea in the sketch, but Wood clarified that her objection was to the creative concept, not Sherman personally. The Los Angeles Times reported Wood’s phrase, “Hating on the concept.”

That distinction matters: Wood criticized the choice to make Chelsea’s teeth central to a fluoride joke and the way she felt the sketch treated the character compared with its other targets. Her comments did not amount to a personal accusation against Sherman.
Did SNL apologize?
Wood said she had received apologies from SNL, as reported by The Guardian and Variety Australia. The cited reports do not identify who apologized or give the apology’s exact wording, so the established detail is Wood’s statement that apologies had reached her.

Why was Chelsea part of the parody?
Wood played Chelsea in season three of Mike White’s The White Lotus, a dark comedy set at a luxury resort in Thailand. That setting and the recognizable characters gave SNL the material for its resort-themed political parody. A February 2025 Guardian review identified HBO as the show’s U.S. home at that time; that dated listing does not establish its current streaming availability. The Guardian’s season-three review provides that background.
