From arcade fighters to survival horror, video games inspired a run of feature films from the 1990s through the mid-2000s. This list pairs ten adaptations with the games behind them; “you probably forgot about” is an editorial hook, not a claim that these movies are objectively obscure or that audiences have forgotten them.

Ten video-game adaptations worth revisiting

The list includes live-action and animated films, and it spans theatrical releases from 1993 to 2006. Release dates can vary by country and format, so the years below identify the commonly listed film year rather than asserting a U.S. premiere date for every title. The adaptation list and its regional distinctions are catalogued in the film reference list; a 2009 roundup offers additional historical context in GameRevolution’s list of movies born of games.

  1. Super Mario Bros. (1993)

The Nintendo platform-game world became a live-action science-fiction adventure, translating Mario and Luigi into a markedly different kind of movie landscape. Capcom’s 2012 annual report later listed the film at $20,915,465 in worldwide box-office revenue, as reported by Capcom and measured as of June 30, 2012—not a current total or an independent estimate.

  2. Double Dragon (1994)

The beat-’em-up arcade series supplied the name and martial-arts premise for a live-action film adaptation. Its place in the period’s game-to-film wave is easy to overlook beside better-known franchises, but that is an editorial impression, not a measure of audience memory.

  3. Street Fighter (1994)

Capcom’s fighting-game roster became the basis for a live-action ensemble film. Capcom’s 2012 annual report lists $99,423,521 in worldwide box-office revenue for Street Fighter, with the company’s figures stated as of June 30, 2012. That historical figure should not be confused with a current total.

  4. Mortal Kombat (1995)

The film brought the fighting game’s tournament premise and recognizable combatants to live action. It is one example of how game adaptations of the era drew on a game’s established characters and setting rather than inventing a wholly separate story world.

  6. Resident Evil (2002)

The survival-horror game series became a live-action film about a deadly outbreak and the people caught in it. Capcom’s 2012 report lists $102,441,078 in worldwide box-office revenue for Resident Evil, as of June 30, 2012. The figure is a dated company report, not a present-day box-office update.

  7. Doom (2005)

The first-person shooter’s demonic threat and science-fiction setting furnished the basis for a live-action adaptation. Its inclusion also shows the range of game genres being mined for movies by the middle of the decade.

  8. Silent Hill (2006)

The horror film drew on the game series’ unsettling town and supernatural atmosphere. Capcom’s 2012 report—whose table covers Japanese game content adapted into movies—lists $97,607,453 in worldwide box-office revenue for Silent Hill, measured as of June 30, 2012. This is a historical company-reported amount, not a current total.

  9. Dead or Alive (2006)

The fighting-game franchise’s characters and combat moved to a live-action feature. Its late arrival in this group makes it a useful reminder that game adaptations continued well beyond the initial wave of 1990s releases.

  10. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994)

Animation qualifies here alongside live action. This feature is a separate adaptation from the 1994 live-action Street Fighter, not a second entry for the same film: it gives the game’s fighters and tournament conflict a distinct animated treatment. GameRevolution’s 2009 list includes it among films born of games.

What the box-office figures can—and cannot—show

Capcom’s Annual Report 2012 labels its table “Revenue Ranking of Japanese Game Content that Has Been Adopted into Movies” and identifies the numbers as worldwide box-office revenue, “As of June 30, 2012. (Capcom figures).” The table also lists other adaptations, including Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D at $296,221,663, Resident Evil: Extinction at $147,717,833, Resident Evil: Apocalypse at $129,394,835, and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within at $85,131,830. Those entries are not included as additional picks here because this is a ten-film retrospective, not a box-office ranking.

These company figures provide dated context, not a consistent measure of critical reception, cultural visibility, or current popularity. A recognizable game property does not by itself establish that a film was well received or that it remains widely remembered.

Why “forgotten” is a matter of perspective

Some titles remain prominent in conversations about game adaptations; others are less often mentioned outside fans of the original games or the era’s genre cinema. There is no objective memory threshold behind this selection. The useful common thread is that each film shows a different route from game to screen: translating characters, a setting, a combat format, or a mood into a feature-length story.
